Seed Mold/Fungus Removal

Butch

Recommended Posts

I have been collecting and cleaning Veitchia seeds to send to some one...   I have soaked and used the drill motor/wire brush method.... They don’t come completely clean if fruit... They have been sitting for a couple of days, and seem to be getting mold or fungus on them.. Can I dip them to proxide, or will that “kill” the seed?.... Any other way to get rid of this stuff, before I put it in the postal service?  I don’t want to send this person non-viable seeds or a bunch of mold to infect his plants/seeds... Help! Thanks, Butch

Soak them in hydrogen peroxide or in a solution of one part bleach to 10 parts water for an hour, rinse and dry quickly (I place them in sunshine in a strainer). Mold needs moisture to develop.

@Butch bless your heart!

Sometimes I send seed that gets moldy even after I clean it. (Perhaps to you?)

And, I've planted enough moldy seed to start a craft brewery . . .

I wouldn't worry about it. A little mold won't hurt the seed! I've had mounds of moldy Archie seed sprout into a lawn, no problem.

Thanks Meg and Dave. I think I’ll let them dry for another day or so, to remove the smell, from setting in the water...Then I’ll drop it at the post office, after I pick up a Flat Rate Box.

If I treat the seeds to kill off any mold will it just re-grow if I put them in a new baggie with fresh sphag?
