I have found spindle palms very hardy for my area. Given a little shelter and they seem to thrive in temps above the thirty degree mark.

Agreed.  There are two really nice Spindles in front of the Sun Trust Tower in Downtown Orlando that have been there for a number of years.  If you have a sheltered area in zone 9B and don't really have the space for a Roystonea, this would be a great alternative that gives you the look without the gargantuan proportions...  :-)

I really like spindles, an under used palm IMO. I have a bunch that are about 17 yrs old, never a problem with anything.

I have three of them that are flanking my front yard.  Takes all day sun and wind without any issues.

Yeah they are a great palm for a warm 9b spot. I have numerous ones here in Port Orange that do great.  I do have A good canopy though.
