Surprise - Maybe This Time

Always a nice surprise of color when a frond falls off. But this time there were other surprises. This is the second year of an attempt at seed. First year was a no-go.

Not sure if you are kidding Meg.... BUT that's a Dictyocaryum lamarkianum!!!

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Not kidding. Thanks for the correction. I can't grow Dictyocaryum either.

  • 10 months later...

Well - almost a year has passed and I finally have my first flowers. It never got this far before, so looking good.

Now - how long do I have to wait for ripe seeds?

Wow Dean. So beautiful. It’s palms like these that get people hooked and possibly even make them move to Hawaii.

I saw this species in habitat in Ecuador in 1996.  If my memory is correct the fruits will be quite large, with a bright red epicarp.  This will make the color overdose even more extreme! :greenthumb:

Nice. The chance of me getting one for the garden has doubled.

If it goes well, I should have plenty.

And I don't believe we have met, have we? You might have to come by soon. :)

Good to know Darold. Since large seeds seem to take longer to grow and ripen, this might be one of the longer start to finish process there is. It is already a year to this point from first indications it was going to flower.
