Chamaedorea tepejilote (?) Scarlet Infructescenses

Recommended Posts

PalmatierMeg

While hand watering this afternoon I noticed the sun shining on the vibrant scarlet red infructescenses on one of my clustering Chamaedoreas (tepejilote? please confirm?) next to the house. I haven't seen such color before - they seem to glow. My Cham tepes in the back yard jungle have already produced crops and these are a bit behind. I took the following photos. So, is this palm unusually colorful or is it just lighting.

Looks like tepejilote to me- at least they look just like mine. I don't have any flowers yet so I can't confirm the color. I think I have one just starting. Looks nice!

Really full garden

Yes , they are native in my highland garden. They do add a nice splash of color.

Meg, we get the same orange and red colour popping out late afternoon throughout the garden, some days more than others.

It is definitely an afternoon thing, with the sun low blue light scatters more than red, so colours up that end of the spectrum show up more.

Tepejilote is a solitary Chamaedorea so, unless yours is multi planted, it's something other than tepejilote. It's beautiful regardless.

Jim, there’s a solitary and a clumping form of tepejilote, I’ve grown both.

Great species, can't have enough of them. They do get quite tall and seeds germinate prolifically. My favourite one is the Chamaedorea ernesti augusti which are hard to find unfortunately. IMAG1892.thumb.jpg.f38d6b63ee7b5434322c2a4aa56098e0.jpg
