The 21st Annual Fall

Plant Extravaganza!

October 4th, 5th, 6th, – 11th, 12th, 13th 2019

The fall planting season is here once again and along with it, the ever-constant familiarity with living in the world of tropical storms. I hope this topic finds you free of damage and storm-related consternation. I am still unloading plants from storage and helping others with their shutters, while eating what perishable hurricane ‘stress’ food is still left. At least I got a lot of emergency weeding and trimming done. Besides the threat of wind and storm surge, this summer has been a mix of extremes here in S. Florida. It was the hottest July and wettest August on record. I have observed the accelerated impact it had on tropical plants. They seemed to need a trim every week and didn’t need any water. Nursery staff spent the summer traveling to various destinations while collecting plant material for propagation. This has led to the production of new Palm species and Croton cultivars for the Extravaganza. In addition to the familiar plant groups, the nursery has new and exciting aroids, tropical flowering trees and ginger relatives. The upcoming IPS Biennial to Réunion will no doubt contribute to the plant talk during the Fall ‘Ganza. I know the possible pre and post-tours to Madagascar have been a hot topic here in the S. Florida palm world. We will have a new vendor at the upcoming Extravaganza -- Tropiflora will make their first appearance. The world-famous nursery will have a section of the sales area and will display an extensive selection of their popular and unique plant collection.

The Searle Brothers Plant Extravaganzas have become exciting plant sales and a great way for IPS Members, Palmtalk Forum Members and fellow tropical palm & plant enthusiasts to come together and meet in the South Florida area. The events have always been a great way to spend a weekend in the company of those who share your passion for gardening and collecting tropical ornamental plants. To describe the events as just mere plant sales would be an understatement; as they have become much more in the form of social events for our friends and family. Forum members, friends and fellow plant collectors have all come from far and wide to attend and we are continuously surprised in the distances they will cover to share in the event. In regards to the following details, I have tried to include as much information about the upcoming Fall 'Ganza as I could. If you see something that you know should be included and it is missing, please post the idea(s) here or contact me, Jeff Searle or the nursery with the methods listed below and let us know...

Directions:
The map below is a general street map of western Broward County, Florida showing the location of the nursery (Palm tree symbol). Using Sheridan Street would be the best option to get to the nursery if you are heading west through the area. If you are taking the Florida Turnpike, use the Griffin Road exit from the north, or the Pines Blvd. exit from the south. If you need any additional directions, please contact the nursery, Jeff or I (Ryan). When you get close to the nursery, look for large power lines as they run east and west above the nursery. Parking is along the shoulder of 172nd Avenue in front of, and down the street from, the nursery entrance. If you intend to arrive early before sunrise (and many usually do) be wary of hard-to-see speed bumps along 172nd Avenue and there is a possibility of a speed trap as well. There has been considerable construction along I-75 so the exits near Sheridan Street and Griffin Road have been changed slightly compared to previous years. Express lanes have been added to I-75, they may or may not make the trip faster.

Plant Availability, Photo Requests:

For plant availability including a copy of the ever-growing list of palms, cycads and other information regarding which plants and species will be for sale, please contact the nursery, Jeff Searle or I (Ryan). The plant selection process has already begun and will continue right up to the last day before the first morning of the Extravaganza, (sometimes even on the mornings of each event day if the need applies.) The sale lists for palms, cycads and crotons will be made available as soon as they are completed. Special selections might be pulled for sale as requests, but only if the plants are available. There will be certain species, varieties and cultivars that will only be available in limited quantities. These rarer plants will likely sell out quickly in the morning hours, so be sure to arrange your wish list accordingly. Plant groups may have been moved around the sales area, relocated or added in with others. In order to speed your way to your favorite plants please ask a nearby staff member or volunteer as to their location.

Like with previous events, I will be able to provide preview photos of the actual plants for sale. They will be posted in this topic for those who are interested. Send me a message or an email with the names of the plants you would like to see. Sale booklets or sale lists will be made available at the Extravaganza. They will include the list of palms, cycads and crotons for sale. Brochure holders positioned along the main shade house sidewalk will have the booklets/sale lists and other information on display. As soon as I have a basic draft list of species and varieties for sale, I will be able to email or PM it to anyone who would want a copy. Each plant will be priced with either a lavender tag or will have the price written on the pot and/or on the display card or sign.

Featured Plant Groups:
The plant selection at the Extravaganza is constantly growing and changing. The largest and most diverse group is by far the Palms, of which there will be over 300 species available in various different sizes. The plant selection will include genera, species, hybrids, cultivars and varieties representing various plant families from around the world. A large number of Croton cultivars will also be on display as their demand has increased production to new levels. There are always new plants to be added to the selection, as the demand for new, exotic and unusual material remains constant...

Aroids: - Bromeliads:

Butterfly Plants: - Cycads: - Crotons:

Cordylines: - Ferns: - Orchids:

Heliconias, Gingers and other Zingiber order members: -

Tropical Flowering Trees, Shrubs, & Vines:

The Sale Flyer:
The nursery will soon mail out sale flyers to everyone on our mailing list. If you are on the mailing list and do not receive one, please let Jeff or myself know. Plant Carts:
We do provide a limited number of carts for customers to use, but it is recommended that you bring your own plant shopping conveyance. The carts do go quickly in the morning of each day, soon after the gates open and during busy periods. During the day when they are returned from the holding area or from the parking lot, they are placed back on the concrete pad across from the register area or near the holding area along the main road.

Accommodations:
A comfortable Hampton Inn is located within a short driving distance of the nursery. It has been used by our customers, volunteers and family members in the past who travel a long way to reach the 'Ganza and who require a comfortable place to stay. The Hampton Inn Pembroke Pines/Ft. Lauderdale West is located at the intersection of I-75 and Sheridan Street. (see map above...) It is further inside the commercial area connected via NW 146th Avenue off of Sheridan Street and is next door to the Cracker Barrel restaurant. New Vendor!

For the first time during a Searle Brothers Nursery event, we will welcome Tropiflora to the Fall Extravaganza!

694257094_TropifloraLogo.thumb.jpg.c471d72a5c75ab0b114b927ddc419956.jpg1132215555_TropifloraLogo2.thumb.jpg.b2e99fdd5f8f6918c6efb3038e8cde7b.jpg

Tropiflora will have a booth at the upcoming fall 'Ganza where they will have a display showcasing their unique collection of plants. Their nursery is world famous for their bromeliads, especially their Tillandsias and has held their own Plant Festival for many years. The selection will focus on their extensive assortment of Tillandsia species and varieties along with their impressive collection of succulents; including their dazzling array of Rhipsalis species and cultivars.

Many of the details are still being worked out and as soon as certain items become fact I will post them. Where their booth (or section) will be located in the sales area is still being figured, including as to how much space they will need and what kind of light exposure, etc. Typically, when I see their booth at plant sales they have a tent with benches and a large spread of plants on the ground, most under shade. It will be exciting to see what plants they will bring, as many are unique to their nursery and bred no where else.

- When I was visiting Tropiflora's website (https://tropiflora.com/) searching for information, I noticed the Fall 'Ganza was already listed on their Calendar of Events. It seems they will be attending for only the first weekend, a detail I will have verified.

I have additional Vendor info...

At this point in time, Tropiflora will be setting up for the first weekend only. It would be a feat of logistics if they decided to stay for the second weekend. If I get any more info I will post it as usual. I am still not sure where their booth will be, it is still being worked out.

Sale info update...

I have the first drafts of the Palm, Cycad and Croton lists. It is quite early, almost a record, to have the first drafts in my hand at this point ahead of the sale. There will be, of course, more time to pull more plants. I have begun to process the lists and as soon as I am finished, I will post the drafts over at Palmpedia...

Link to Palmpedia mirror topic: http://www.palmpedia.net/forum/threads/21st-annual-fall-searle-plant-extravaganza.6004/

Continue to send in messages and emails or post comments here and I will answer them as they come in. I will answer what requests I get with the list draft copies in my possession. I have a good amount of photo requests right now, even without having the lists posted. A surprise for sure, but it makes things interesting. I didn't have the time to hunt down many species today, as many plants are still in their growing areas scattered about the nursery.

- A few photos of the Palm goodness as it comes together in the main shadehouse. I had time to do a quick walk down and back along the sidewalk. The selection only represents the material pulled from the first shadehouse, as a large percentage is still in other areas of the nursery, waiting to be pulled. Starting near the shadehouse entrance...

- A view looking back to the entrance, not far from the intersection. (B) One side of the tables being lined up before receiving their one-gallon plants and other smaller occupants. Tables may be on one side or both, not sure yet.

- A stroll into the second shadehouse reveals another section of Palms waiting to be pulled and placed in the main shadehouse, or the sales area proper.

- Not all of the palms are waiting to be relocated, only the majority near the sidewalk. This is the second of several areas to be pulled from and it is a large amount.

During my quick run-through, I spotted a few items on the request list...

- Cyrtostachys loriae - 3 gal. - $100.00 - There are more likely other sizes to be pulled, but the three gallons are the ones I found.

DSC_0973.thumb.JPG.26f4589a295df141cfbe9fcd6849df1f.JPGDSC_0974.thumb.JPG.f2bd60993f620cce68073f287594853b.JPG

- Lemurophoenix halleuxii - 1 gal. - $125.00 - Even in a hurry a red new leaf is hard to ignore. I will try and get a better shot of the entire plant. P.S. Did you know there is now a second species of Lemurophoenix? Cool stuff.

- Syagrus weddelliana - 1 gal. - $20.00 - Everyone's favorite former Lytocaryum.

Plant list info...

I have the first draft of the Croton list ready for inspection. It currently encompasses 152 cultivars and is about 98% complete. The list is early, so there is time for more cultivars to be pulled and added to the selection. This may or may not happen, but the chance is higher than usual.

Plant list info...

The first draft of the Palm & Cycad list is up and posted over at Palmpedia. With the added time between now and the sale, there will more species and sizes pulled, I have no doubt. The first draft currently sits at 308 species, varieties, cultivars and hybrids spread across almost 400 size groups. I would place the list at 80% complete.

Link to post: http://www.palmpedia.net/forum/threads/21st-annual-fall-searle-plant-extravaganza.6004/#post-61823

I know when I do my checklist I will find a few hidden species that didn't make the first list. As I find additions and as more plants are pulled, I will add them to the posted list, with a notification posted here. Any other changes will be posted as well. With the list being posted, I am expecting more requests. I will try and get them done in the order they are received. I will be sending off copies of the list to those who have asked earlier.

There is a (.pdf) version of the list after the post. Happy viewing!

Ryan,

I can't get Palmpedia to load, even using the link.   Anyway, you could email me the pdf.

Thanks

Hi Geri,

I sent the lists in a private message through the Forum. Let me know if you get them. I do not have your email handy, but I can send them again if you PM me your email or post it here. Palmpedia has its ups and downs, literally. When it is up, the link should go right to the post.

Plant list info...

I have posted a group of additions to the Palm & Cycad list over at Palmpedia:

Link to post: http://www.palmpedia.net/forum/threads/21st-annual-fall-searle-plant-extravaganza.6004/#post-61825

After the post I included a second draft of the list in an attachment. The list grows day by day, no pun intended. The second draft stands at about 326 species.

More Plant list info...

Another group of additions to the Palm & Cycad list have been posted over at Palmpedia:

Link to post: http://www.palmpedia.net/forum/threads/21st-annual-fall-searle-plant-extravaganza.6004/#post-61837

I updated the booklet/sales list to a third draft and added it to a post as a (.pdf) file. The list stands at 338 species and close to 440 size groups. I have a large batch of photo requests and other "more unusual" requests. I will get them done in the order I received them. I can still answer direct questions posted here or in a PM or email, which seems to be the preferred method of communication. If the list at Palmpedia is not working, send me a message and I will send you a copy. When I have a final version of the booklet/sales list I will post it here as an attachment.

Sale update...

The nursery has been in full Extravaganza mode for a month now and its beginning to show. The sales area is beginning to take form one plant group at a time. I spent much of the day taking photos and taking inventory of the Palms. Most of the photos are for requests and I will post some of them here. I found a few more species and sizes for the list, and I am sure I will find some more during the setup of next week.

- A view looking out from the white tent at the sidewalk intersection, the hub of the shadehouse and Palm selection. (B) The tables are packed. They are mostly sorted but I will need to do some rearranging, species groups, rarity, card placement, etc.

- The sidewalk is packed as well. A lot of Palm eye candy. Travis and Carson make their way through. Most of the palms are in their sale locations, but I know some size groups will need to be moved.

- Rhapis excelsa var. 'Variegated' - 3 gallon (b) - $125.00 - The second of two variegated forms of Lady Palm in a three gallon pot. This was originally a mother plant that was frequently divided, becoming a supplier of smaller material. I am not sure as to a cultivar name or if it ever had one, but it has full-sized R. excelsa leaves with a showy, nice variegation.

- It is an old plant. It has a tall single stem with smaller suckers at the base.

- It produces segments that are completely cream-white and others that are mixed with alternating green/cream-white striations. The newer leaves are glossy.

- A Chambeyronia macrocarpa var. hookeri with a red new leaf. It's not for sale at the moment, I just wanted to show off the leaf. :P Timing is everything. If this began just a few days later, it would have a tag hanging from the petiole. It still might get pulled, but I believe the others from the same block, sitting on the sidewalk are larger plants; and are $150.00. There is a 15 gallon specimen for sale, somewhere, but I haven't found him yet.

- Rhapis excelsa var. 'Variegated' - 3 gallon (a) - $85.00 - This is the first or smaller of the two variegated Lady Palms. This cultivar also does not have a name that I know of. It is a dwarf. It is short and compact with simplified leaves. The variegation is more refined and is much more consistent through the leaves.

DSC_0088.thumb.JPG.ea04a724ad673bcd95822eeff9ab35e9.JPGDSC_0089.thumb.JPG.7b8c39633c27ed7f6e5c3d054cd87453.JPG

- Part of the variegation contains super fine lines of creamy white alternating with lime green striations.

DSC_0090.thumb.JPG.314d2622868f8680f41cbfd72dfe1c92.JPG

- Each time this cultivar comes up for sale, the plants are always the same size. It either remains short or is very slow.

- Cyrtostachys sp. 'Hybrid' - 7 gallon $950.00 - 25 gallon $2,000.00 - Hard water mixed with some old fungicide covers some of the leaves. I will try and wash it off. It doesn't bother the plant much and eventually comes off on its own, or is replaced with newer leaves.

- The Croton section, as it was being filled from front to back. Jeff was using semaphore code to direct which plants to bring next.

- "There's still room in the back." The Crotons are randomly mixed throughout the section. The popular and common mixed with the rare and one-of-a-kind. They are all tagged and priced.

- Camptosema spectabile - 3 gallon on trellis $45.00 - Dwarf Red Jade Vine. It was previously known as Camptosema grandiflorum, also spelled C. grandiflora sometimes. I didn't notice it at the time, but flower buds seem to be emerging near the axillary joints, visible near the top of the second photo. Later, as I was driving home, Jeff called to inform me he found what appeared to be buds. This is a new plant for us and we didn't figure it would bloom so fast, as these are young plants. It might not be in bloom by next weekend, but we shall see what it does by then.

Something new...

A special addition to the topic, a video previewing some of the plants that will be seen next weekend at the Extravaganza. Jeff and Travis made the video today, with Jeff in front of the lens and Travis at the controls. The sales area is still being setup, so the video focuses on the sections that were ready today.

- The video starts at the intersection by the tent and then moves around the shadehouse.

Plant list update...

Today held a few surprises while getting the shadehouse ready for this weekend. More items were pulled, more were tagged. I have posted the additions to Palmpedia:

Link to post: http://www.palmpedia.net/forum/threads/21st-annual-fall-searle-plant-extravaganza.6004/#post-61845

The list of Palm & Cycads now stands at 350 species and many more size groups.

Sale and plant list update...

Well it's all getting there. The shadehouse is full and many of the sale sections are getting placed, tagged, etc. I have a would-be final version of the Palm & Cycad list. I have posted it at Palmpedia as just an attached (.pdf) file. The list stands at 353 taxa across nearly 450 size groups. There could always be a last minute add-on or two, but they won't be on the list... they will be somewhere as 'unlisted specials' as we like to call them.

Link to post: http://www.palmpedia.net/forum/threads/21st-annual-fall-searle-plant-extravaganza.6004/#post-61847

The final version includes a few add-ons and a couple of size and name changes that were not in the earlier draft. Since it is a final version and everything is already tagged and priced, I can add a copy of the final version here, in case Palmpedia is having issues.

Final version of the Palm & Cycad list: ExpFile_PalmCycadF19.pdf

I have some more photo requests spanning the spectrum of tropical plants, I will try and get them tomorrow.

Sale update...

What a weekend. Many sections of the sales area, including the shadehouse were very popular. Palms were of course the major group, but the Crotons, Aroids and Gingers & Heliconias were appropriately thinned out. Restocking was required 'at the moment' during the sale and after closing and even before opening.

For the second weekend, I can check to see if your targeted plants or species are still available and in what sizes. Restocking where possible is going on now between weekends. Certain plants may not be restocked just because we figure the demand might not be as high during the second weekend, but if you make a request they could definitely get pulled and tagged. Let myself or Jeff know what you are looking for, by posting it here or via the usual methods.

Thank you to Ryan, Jeff and Scott for my new acquisition, Cyrtostachys renda "Apple".  The palm made it home safely and is enjoying the mild, humid, rainy weather we are having.  It is standing in about an inch of water and should be good outside until November when I will bring it indoors into a wet, hot terrarium for the winter.  If I can just get a little size on it over the next couple years, I think it will be able to contend with most of our winter weather, since this variety might be of hybrid origin and thus more cold hardy than Cyrtostachys renda.

It was great talking palms with all of you and my boyfriend enjoyed meeting you and also showed an interest in all of the palms.  For him, the weekend provided a much needed, if brief, respite from college.  Thanks again and all the best!

This was my first time going to the Searle Bros. sale.  The selection was great and the sale is during my favorite time of year.  I picked up a Satakentia while I was there since we have a really nice looking one next to the Publix parking garage in downtown.  Thanks again!
