Baby Koi

Really full garden

Recommended Posts

I have had my koi for almost ten years and never really thought there was a possibility that they would reproduce, today I was shocked to see 100+ baby koi 1-2 cms long darting around the waterlily pads.

I have 22 koi between 40-80 cms, both standard and butterfly. About six weeks ago I noticed my koi almost stopped eating and spent most of their time chasing each other around the pond. there was a lot of jumping and splashing as well. I now realize that this must have been the males chasing the females in a mating frenzy.

I did not think that koi would reproduce without big changes in water temperature. My climate in my highland garden is almost constant.

I am not sure what to do with the fry. The ones that are easier to see are orange and some metallic shades as well.

Do any palmtalkers raise koi?

This is awesome! And yes; you're very accurate in your assumption of what they were doing.

I'm not surprised - Koi are very popular here, and they are almost impossible NOT to breed, if you have both sexes, and some water.

I have 4 or 5 ponds, and a couple of 300 gallon aquariums. (And used to sell Koi at my old store along with aquatic plants.) Love 'em!

My favorites were the Shusui, and the Ghost Koi.

Mine don’t have any Japanese pedigree. I think they came from Israel. My favorites are the metallic colored ones .

Mine have survived two major volcanic eruptions. Last year they were left to fend for themselves when I had to evacuate. They did not have their normal diet for a week and only got sporadic feedings when I was finally allowed back to my house for a few minutes.

It is amazing how attached I am to them .

Yes, pics please! If you want to rid yourself of the fry, add a few cichlids!

Naples (inland), FL - technically 10a but more like 9b in the winter :hmm:

That's awesome! I was big into Koi back in the 1990's. My fish bred once. It was exciting to see unexpected babies swimming around! Kind of got out of the hobby after a few devastating losses from a wide array of issues. Now my son is into fish so we have been planning out a Koi pond. Hoping to break ground next year. Good luck with the new Koi. Pics please!!
