Between the two of you that is the most well-documented trip I've ever seen.

I think Paul and Dave should form their own "Pop-Rock Combo".

The bamboo in Post 134 slayed me. Never seen a gold one retain culmsheaths like that. Must look at it again... now I see pinstripes! I wish Dave's swooning couch wasn't so far away. I'm going back for one more look...

Fantastic is the word beacuse fantasy is what they used to design those gardens. Thank you Paul for the marvelous pictures. We all envy your trip.

I wonder where is that unreal place with H.lagenicaulis with coffee, and D.decaryi with aubergines, is it still the botanic garden in Ubud?

The last taro pictured with deeply lobed leaves is surely Alocasia portei.

Thank you, Paul for this magnificent journey to Bali. We went there in 2000 and I miss it alot. I will try to scan pics from our album to share.

Did you go to Ubud by any chance?

One of the pictures shows coffee plant.

There is a PBS special "Gardens of Bali" which gives a tour of MW's garden as well as some others. There is a book of the same title which is an eye candy too.

Paul:

Our "base"was Ubud and we drove all over the place. You must have noticed how "fun" driving is on Bali. Traffic lights on Bali are purely for decorative purposes.

In the evenongs, we went to see shows in the local theater. Legong dance blew me away, and the shadow puppet show "wayang kulit" was great. We watched it in awe and stayed to the end, even though we couldn't undestartand a word the "dalang" (shadow puppet master) was saying.

If you haven't read the book "Island of Bali" by Miguel Covarrubias, I not just recommend it butI SRONGLY urge you to read it. It is a must book for those who have been there, and especially those who plan a trip in the future. I wish i had read it before I went there. The book was written th the 30-ies but everything applies to modern times because things haven't changed that much on Bali, except for the southern part of the island, where most of tourists stay.

The black and white pictures at the end of the book are beautiful. My daughter found 1937 cloth bound edtion, and if you can find it, it will be your treasure.

I just love the place so much!! Thank you for the journey again.

It is a pleasure as well, to read this fascinating thread and look at those photos, Paul. I hope that despite  heated political debates from time to time in "The Palapa", we can still be palm friends.

Very best to you,

Ania

If I may add something about the mentioned Bali book. It was written by a Mexican anthropologist, who researched many aspects of Balinese life. Customs, believs, dance, marriage and death. All that applies to their lives today.

I will write more about driving on Bali in my thread, when my pictures are ready to post.
