Livistona lanuginosa - White teeth or no ?

The Silent Seed

Recommended Posts

Noticed a significant difference in my largest seedling compared to the others - it has huge white teeth along the edge of the leaves. (Read: leaves, not petiole.) Two of the pics are the same plant and the third picture is of the others that are also lanuginosa, but look different.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I’ve got around 7 or 8 seedlings and none look like your first pic. They do look like the others though. First thing I though when I saw the first pic was Washingtonia, if not, then maybe a hybrid?

Interesting - I can see that yours are like most of mine. The one with big white teeth was the only one that came up this way, in this batch.

Maybe a random Washingtonia (or hybrid) got into the seed bag?

Thank you for your input!

Jude,

I don't have any experience with L. lanuginosa, but I have seen L. nitida and decora seedlings show this trait as well as Copernicia alba and prunifera.  Washies show the teeth on the petiole but not the leaf.

Hi Jon,

Thank you for your input, as well!

I also have several other Livistona species seedlings, and none of them have ever shown this trait. (Granted, L. nitida is one that I haven't grown.)

As it grows, hopefully it will become more apparent what's going on with this guy. Thank you!
