Fuzzy Dioon spinulosum eruption

Recommended Posts

I have a couple of Dioon spinulosum that I dug from the ground and potted a long while back, almost two years ago. The caudexes are midway between soccer and softball size, about eight or nine inches (20 -22.5 cm) across.

And they just sat there, but didn’t rot so I waited.

One of them has just produced a fuzzy flush of new leaves. They’re really fuzzy, though Tar Baby, pictured below is fuzzier, if not by that much.

My  encephalartos laurentianus   and  encephalartos longifolius var joubertina  come up fuzzy like that, but I don't recall any of my dioons being anywhere near that fuzzy.

Might be mejaie,

My spinulosum may have some fuzz, but not enough that I would think of it as a fuzzy emergent.  My Dioon mejiae on the other hand is super fuzzy.  As a side note Dave, while you dug yours out, I finally planted mine.  Mine started with me as a band size 1 leafer in the mid to late 00's and made it's way up to a 15 gallon before finally going into the ground.  Here is part of a flush on the D mejiae a little further along in the unfurling process

I am guessing that isn't a spinulosum. Might be mejaie, and if not, rezdowskii.

Hmm. D. rzedowskii sure looks like a spinulosum.

I've got mejaie, too, and it's different, though it is also fuzzy when unfurling.

The hand in that picture can hold its own too when it comes to fuzziness. :D

Yeah, that might be a mixed blessing . . .

Rezdowskii looks a lot like spinulosum, but there are color differences and a slight leaflet difference that isnt obvious. The fuzz on that plant is rezdowskii color, but when people show these pictures, it is hard to say because of different growing conditions and you don't know how much of a collector the person is. Spinulosum is pretty easy to find, mejaie is somewhat easy to find, and a true rezdowskii is somewhat hard to find in comparison.
