Some Livistona Chinensis habitat images

Hello there,

while waiting for the start of my son's baseball game I had a few minutes

for myself that I used to give the surrounding area a closer look.

001.thumb.jpg.2ef421d0d4cc25e2c09a655fe9484b7c.jpg

I knew that there is a sacred place for the local gods, called 'utaki' but I had never paid it a visit before.

002.thumb.jpg.4f48de9a56ace4fd9dcee5ac17bd2631.jpg

A sticking out L. Chinensis was all I needed to get hooked.

Reaching the end of the steps I stopped for a moment and remained silent to show my respect - then I took

a deep breath and worked my way around the sacred place deeper into the wood.

From here it started to get interesting, L. Chinensis all over the place, young and old ones.

Beautiful.

The trunk of this one looks really old.

Moving forward very slowly and then I felt like in an Indiana Jones movie...

009.thumb.jpg.cecc5e186183741f025ff1db5b0aa125.jpg

Taking another step through the boscage my eyes got wide - a path! Looking to the right...

014.thumb.jpg.2dc220984d44a8ac80f9a33348a78a72.jpg

...and to the left. Yes , definitely a path but on it's way to get overgrown. Give it five more years and it

won't be recognizable anymore...

However, I took some more photos...

...before finally finding the path's entrance.

021.thumb.jpg.b2d208d0acc514e81d2e82a0d0d49159.jpg

It was a very short 'expedition' but definitely an interesting one. After making a mental note to pay

this place another visit, ...

...it was time to move back to the playing field.

Thank you for your time -

best regards from Okinawa

@Pal Meir- Thank you!

No, I havn't been there yet (Aoshima) but one day I will - as well as the Bonin Islands as the

home of the Livistona boninensis. But the very first destination I am going to visit (again) will be

Iriomote, home of the beautiful Satakentia (I have been there 15 years ago but at that

time I wasn't into palms....:() I remember your threads about your visit down there and will

gladly follow your foot steps... ;)

is arenga engleri ?

Arengas are everywhere over here, more in the woods than in the open area and it is always

nice to look at them. Of course I took some pictures of them during my short expedition, too -

here they are...

Sometimes it is hard to distinguish between A. engleri and A. ryukyuensis - some are looking like

A. engleri but are somehow too small, others are looking like A. ryukyuensis but are too big -

so A. engleri var. ryukyuensis makes a lot of sense even if I lack the knowledge and experience

to identify this variation correctly...

...

No hijacking of my own thread intended -

Here an old photo from Aoshima:

A ryukyuensis is obviously only a variant of A engleri:

I remember that photo, you have posted it before - very impressive. I am just wondering how old those specimen must be.  Here on Miyako I would consider them more as slow - some of the palms I see almost every day have barely gained any height since I moved down here ten years ago.
