Hello San Clemente!

Today's PSSC tour included 2 very mature gardens in Orange County, California.  The first was the garden of Bill and Shala Taylor, where cycads and dinosaurs live in perfect contentment.

The house is perched on a steep canyon. Palms planted years ago well below the level of the house and pool are dramatically overhead now.

Many were flowering and fruiting.

Really tall Pritchardia...

Cozy art studio located away from the main house on the canyon rim with a view of the palms. The canyon is reflected on the glass.

Ed Green with Latania palm. I think he said it would be the red form. Many of us mistook it for a green Bismarckia, but as Ed pointed out, the leaf bases and trunk are quite different from the standard Bismarckia.

Really nice pebble work at the house next door (also owned by the Taylors).

The Muir garden is a true collector's garden.  A discussion was underway as to the correct species of this Kentiopsis.DSC_7999.thumb.jpg.1f925fd319460afa75c43572479e19c7.jpg

It was soon determined by BS Man about Palms to be (correction) pyriformis, not magnifica. Don Tollefsen and Bob DeJong are in agreement.

Great pictures Kim. Thanks for posting. One note, that palm referred to as a Jubaea couldn't possibly be one. The crown shafts and skinny trunk  point to something else. Not sure what but I'm sure someone will chime in. Looks like Kentiopsis.

Could the last one be a R. Bauerii?

Yes, I think you are correct. One was actually labeled R. Baueri v. cheesmanii, but not sure if it was that one.  There were several Rhopalstylis in the garden. Here is a tall one:

Thanks for posting these Kim! I miss your photologs!!

BUT, it was a Kentiopsis "pyriformis"... not a "piersoniorum"...or  "magnifica" as the sign said.

And Jim.. that was a "stiffy/upright" version of Jubea.. a bit on the slim side for a Jubea I'll admit. Many of us decided the the yard was starting to show the effects of underwatering in places.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Oops! My bad... I guess I wasn't paying close attention to the discussion, too busy snapping pics...

Thanks @Kim for joining us and memorializing a grand day with lovely pictures!

I took a few, but none to compare the ones produced by Kim's Paparazzi CameraR.
