Fragrant blooming palms?

Tracy

Recommended Posts

I have been enjoying the fragrance of my Arenga engleri of late and was wondering what other palms have fragrant blooms.  One can be several yards away from this clump of A. engleri and smell it's sweet smell.  I have a row of Cycas thouarsii not too far away with 3 males which when coning have an odor a bit less attractive.   It is nice to have this palm which helps smother the male C. thouarsii's odor and the neighbor's across the street seem to agree as do the bee's who can be heard buzzing around it.

Share suggestions on other palms one can plant with fragrant blooms.

Brahea armata surely. Very fragrant flowers. Even male flowers of Phoenix dactylifera have for a while a sweet fragrance. For heaven's sake not Phoenix theophrasti!

It must be the Hyophorbe genus.  That’s a great description of indica’s fragrance as well.

Good Afterboon:

I like to artificially reproduce the fragrance of a plam tree flower in northern Colombia. This flowers fragrance is the traditional odor for the holy week where a lot palm tree flower are sacrified and used as ornamental and its feagrance throughout centuries, has become a iconic fragrance to the region. Our society is aware this specific palm tree is endangered and we are avoiding to use this flowers but we like to reproduce its molecular formula to artificially reproduce the fragrance and use in incense and recreate this fragrance. My question is: What steps to follow to create a sample of the fragrance. See the picture attache is the white flower part.

I'll add another, Ravenea glauca male flowers.  I don't have a female for comparison and don't know if all this genus has fragrant flowers like R glauca or if it is hit and miss.  Anyone know about others in this genus that are fragrant either male or female?
