The new 'Aroid Craze'

Recommended Posts

Has anyone noticed the aroid craze going on at the moment? A small 4" pot of albo-variegated Monstera adansonii sold last week on eBay for over $2000. A small Aglaonema picta tricolor sold for over $300. Alocasia cuprea is selling for over $100. And on and on. I hope this calms down soon, so that everyday normal people who don;t have $2000 to spend on a plant can have a chance to acquire something new, I remember when the craze over the 'Big Three' (c2007) was in progress....Anthurium superbum, Anthumium jenmanii and Anthurium willifordii were selling for hundreds of dollars. You can get a superbum for as little as $10 now.

I think the Anthurium craze has been going on for several years. I think this craze is fueled by buyers in Asia.

El Oasis - beach garden, distinct wet/dry season ,year round 20-38c

Las Heliconias - jungle garden ,800m elevation,150+ inches rainfall, year round 15-28c

Yep! Thank us Millennials! LOL Tropical plants (house plants for the Northerners) are the latest craze (though, I was into them before they were "cool":lol:). If it has variegated or velvet leaves, all the better! I know whose eBay sale list you're talking about. I stupidly bid $170 for the Anthurium forgetii (because I was a pure specimen so bad) and someone sniped in 5 seconds before the auction ended and won it for like $195 or something. The thing about Aroids these days is that non-pure species are being sold as actual species. When you find a reputable grower, like the one we're referring to, collectors are happy to pay extra for peace of mind.

Sometimes I look at her auction list purely for entertainment.  The prices that folks drive the auctions up to are INSANE! She's a good egg, though, so she deserves all the profit and then some!

Check all us plant nerds out on Instagram and see the lust for them!
