Too Many Palms?

My wife tells me I’m starting to collect too many palms in pots on our patio. That’s crap right? Where does she get off. I mean who does she think she is? That’s grounds for divorce right? I tell her there’s way freakier people on palmtalk than me. :floor:

To be bluntly honest.. Good sport or not,  ( ..and at the expense of opening a cage full of rabid feral cats.. ) Had an ex who attempted the same conversation. Looked at her and made a quick comparison to all the stuff she had ( clothing , shoes, etc.. ) That ended that conversation..  Best decision i had made in sometime. Life is full of choices, some aren't as wonderful as they're made out to be.  Gotta choose wisely. :greenthumb:

Oh man. Haha. No, we’re good. It is funny though, it seems pretty often we both get packages on same day. Her...clothes. Me....palms or cycads.

Same. "In this world at this time don't you think yelling at someone for planting a tree says more about you?"  I tried that with MY wife last weekend, didn't work so well...

Lol, I hear ya.. and  just in case it might have came across differently, not implying anything negative..  There's a balance, ..or, at least, there should be. As long as both people are content, and can poke a little fun at each others hobbies.. then all is good..   Heck, we both know there are much worse ways to spend money .. or blindly tolerate money being spent on..

I hope most people understand I’m joking about my wife. She’s pretty cool with my whole palm & cycad addiction. She actually really enjoys the backyard oasis I have tried to create. Great for parties or small gatherings. The only thing she asks of me is if I can try to keep the immediate patio area outside our sliding glass door area not so over cluttered so she (and my boys) can walk around without tip toeing around and over so many pots. A more functional patio space if you will. Not a nursery or plant storage. Wish I had a greenhouse. Need to build some sort of protection on the side of my house to protect these youngens from the sun.

Absolutely. It may be hard to tell cause my garden is pretty young but I’ve got several (about 50) in the ground in the backyard. Looking for or trying to create the right spot for many of these. Because my garden is juvenile I only have so much partly shaded areas where I can plant these without frying them. Working on it though. I just threw caution to the wind and planted a Chambeyronia in the front yard with no sun protection at all.  It’s a 15 gallon size. We’ll see what happens. Right next to a recently planted 5 gallon Tri-Bear.

What is she talking about ?

If there was no space left on that naked table then she might have a case.

I've got the opposite effect here. I could put a huge new palm on back porch on center of table and he wouldn't notice it. LOL.

That's right...the idea is to initially get so many that when you add others, they won't notice...:innocent:

Haha. That’s funny because that is generally what has always happened. She never notices the new ones when I get them.  It’s just after awhile when they all start to gather up she’s like, “Hey, are these all new”? My usual reply, “No hun, I just moved them so I can re-pot them”. :)

I do move my small potted plants around a lot. Sometimes I stash them in the back corners of my yard where I do have some shade. It’s just easier for me to water them when they are right here by the house. Plus I get to see and enjoy them. Btw, when we do have people over for a bbq or something I do move them all out of the way.  That’s what a great guy I am. (Kidding)

I have about 50 palms and 20 cycads in the ground now (in 0.75 acres) and another 40 or so in pots.  I keep my "nursery" area on the SW corner of the house under two 15' tall Queens, so the pots don't bother her.  And it's next to one of my driplines, so I set up an automatic sprinkler for them.  My wife gets cardmaking and crafting supplies, I get palms and cycads!

I bought a few 7-10G Dioon Edule from PT member ChuckG yesterday, and she helped me move them around to a temporary spot.  She liked the ferns that used to occupy my entire backyard, so when she saw the Edules she said, "Ooooo, those look like giant ferns!"  I was secretly giving myself a mental high-five.  :floor:

Then she saw the 10' tall Encephalartos Hildebrantii...no more mental high fives.  :D

How is your double coconut palm doing?  You were kind enough to give me a tour of your beautiful garden back in summer 2010.

I always try to hide the envelopes with newly ordered seeds until the palms germinate. Who could throw away a new sprouting life? Nobody is this cruel! The fact that I can grow only indoor mostly makes it even more challenging, any extra centimeter of living space occupied by palms is noticeable. :D

What my wife doesn’t know is I have an order from Floribunda arriving today. Time to do some shuffling around. The good news for me is I work from home. She doesn’t. So I am always praying the shipments arrive before she gets home.

We saw this on a sign the other day and she pointed it out to me.

It read.......”There’s a fine line between hobby and mental illness”.

My wife is the same. She asked if I could get rid of my shade house, so she could make an outdoor yoga practice area...

As a loving husband I told her, “Of course hun, but I made a promise to the kids that I would move my cycads out of their play area first.”

Then I proceeded to explain how hot it was outside this time of year and that maybe I would wait for cooler weather before I planted anything...

The funny thing is, one would almost think this talk about hiding new palms and such is us just kidding around, but in many cases, not so much.  I have tried to discreetly tuck away new palm and other plant purchases on more than one occasion to try to hide my “addiction”.  It usually worked!

I have an order shipping Monday, my wife just ignores it all. As I have told her before, it could be way worse, I could be spending the money on other um less healthy things.

Yeah, I have a bit of OCD. I hate clutter. So I walk a very fine line between my OCD and my addiction to palms/cycads. I actually think my addiction is winning but I try hard to maintain so order.

This thread is hilarious! I can relate to pretty much all of it.  I also work from home and have prayed that Floribunda orders would show up at times when the wife and kids weren't home yet, negotiating sand box and play space for the kids...., etc. etc.  Glad to know I'm not the only one! LOL
