A few snaps from Darold Petty's garden

Recommended Posts

My daughter, Riley, and I had the chance to visit with Darold Petty in SF yesterday.  I had to pick up a plant I have been looking for, and an update on the garden was warranted!  For those of you not aware, Darold lives in one of the chilliest parts of SF, seldom warmer than the mid-60s...literally a totally different climate than mine 27 miles away.  We can often be 35-40 degrees different in the summer...and as such grow vastly different species.  As those of you who have been to Darold's know, it's impossible to capture the grandeur of some of the palms on a small city plot in photos, so it's really worth visiting.  With that said, here are a few snaps I took anyway...I will try to remember species names, but perhaps Darold can chime in with any adds/corrections.

Finally, the expert negotiator...if daddy gets to tour palm gardens, shouldn’t Riley get more fish for her aquarium? Of course she should!

Big thanks to Darold for hosting us, and showing us around.  And, to Darold's wife, Jan, for helping entertain a quite patient 5 year old!

Riley is so cute - small wonder that she got something!!  How can you say "no" to that face?  :)

Darold certainly has some awesome palms!  I think he should get a taller flagpole (or maybe the Ceroxylon would work) for his awesome US flag - you can hardly see the colors for all of the palms!

Given the constraints of garden size and climate, one couldn’t have made better specimen choices. Also consider how rare and hard to obtain at the time of planting.

Way to go Darold! A collectors collector.

Really impressive palms. And rare species that we don't get to see much of here. Although I am working with several Hedyscepes.

Thanks for posting pics of Darolds awesome garden. I never tire of seeing pics of his stuff. I want to grow everything he’s growing.

And good on ya for taking your daughter to the fish shop. I used to be into fish when I was a kid and a trip to the fish shop was the most exciting thing. It’s great she has an interest in nature.

She was arguing with me in the car about behavioral profiles and diets of various shark species. At 5 years old. :D

Ben,

Thank you for the great tour through Darold's garden!

Impressive palms and they look so well. Even if barely to make out, the Ceroxylon quindiuense

must be jaw dropping.

Btw., when I was a kid, I had three aquariums... :D

Best regards from Okinawa -

Lars

Thanks for sharing. Epic garden, for sure! I wish I could grow those palm species in my very limited coastal influenced garden. I once tried a Lepidorrhachis and it died in a day or two of Mission Viejo inland heat!!

Thanks for the great tour Ben! Darold as always, fantastic!! and THANKS for an opportunity to join the Lepidorrhachis club!! The big one from you just opened a leaf! My smaller one is plugging along fine too!

I want to ask about the upper photo... it looks remarkably like a Dypsis!

Bill, the 'another' Ceroxylon is C. vogelianum.  I grew it from seed from the late Inge Hoffmann.  Busy today, but later I will try to post a better photo of the bunched leaflet attachment.

Good news about your Lepi  !  :greenthumb:
