I love it when I’m on the big Island and shopping at Home Depot and see this.  I ended up getting a smaller 1 gallon pot from Walmart.

Ahhh, progress.  Though I remember seeing Pritchardia and Licuala at the Kona big box store when I was there in 2005.

First time I see one that big! I'm afraid to see what they are asking for that. The typical size I always see is the smaller one in front and those go for $250? Is that normal prices for them in the mainland?

My little one I got from Walmart $40.  I didn’t look at the price for the big one at Home Depot but the little one was over $300.

I put in two rows of them for a client here on Oahu at $250 each, and a large 25 gallon at $800 ( which has since died) . I see those small ones at Home depot occasionally.

Slow at first but the two rows have taken off like rockets over the years

This one was one of those $19.99 Walmart had them one year.  It is my biggest one I have right now. I wish I would’ve bought a lot more of them at the time.

Both the Hilo Home Depot and Walmart stores always have Red Sealing Wax and Dwarf Areca Catechu palms in gallon size containers at very reasonable prices. HD occasionally has some unusual palms. I got a beautiful 15 gallon size Neoveitchia storckii and a nice 15 gallon Pinanga coranada there.  The Hilo HD garden center is always worth a look when you are in the area.

Didn't you see Joeys and some other palms that are considered on the rarer side on the main land at the Home Depot when you first moved there?

Naples (inland), FL - technically 10a but more like 9b in the winter :hmm:

Missi is right, I got this 3 gallon Joey from home depo. It was rather pricey but I think it was worth it

When I first came to the big Island Home Depot used to carry a lot better palm selection some real cool palms. That’s when I was able to pick up this beauty it was a lot smaller when I got it like a one gallon.

Now they got a new person at Home Depot in the garden department making orders for plant material that knows nothing of the cool tropical plants out there.  Now it’s a lot of common main land kind of plants and some tropicals but not as cool as they used to be at least for me.

Nice finds! On Oahu you have to scour the nurseries of Waimanalo to find deals. The big box rip everyone off and give the same garbage plants as everyone else. Just got 4 1gal crytostachys for $15 each after looking! They’re in the ground now

  • 2 weeks later...

Hilo Walmart got a new shipment somehow one of these in it up in my shopping cart lol.  While I was shopping there someone spotted what I had in my cart and I said yes it is a sealing wax palm. I think he bought more than just one because when I walked back by there were only four left.

One of our big stores (Bunnings) regularly has C. renda but the price has been creeping up. These are 200mm pots at $33.98. Just next to them, same size pots, are Rhapis excelsa at $32.48. The C. renda seem to be selling faster as there's only a few left but there's a lot more R. excelsa left.

I thought I wasn’t gonna buy anymore but I was at Walmart and they were down to just one of them left needless to say now they got none Lol.  Hopefully all the ones I picked up this year do well and add a lot of color to my garden.

Wow, very interesting thread!

All I can do here is to get seeds shipped in large scale to get a few plants out of it -

if I am lucky. But as mentioned above, a very interesting thread! Seeing how seedlings

should look like in a salable/plantable stage is very educating.

Best regards from Okinawa -

Lars
