Artificial Palm Thatch

Really full garden

Recommended Posts

This past week workers completed changing my natural palm thatch roof for a new synthetic one. I am very pleased with the results. Natural palm roofs have to be replaced every 8-10 years. After 2-3 years they need yearly maintenance . Palm roofs that are not in almost 100% sunny exposures have a much shorter life.

This new roof has a life of 30 years and is guaranteed for 20. Disney is now using this product as well. It is fire retardant and the material is recyclable .

I do miss the smell of a new natural palm roof, but that only lasts a few weeks.

A local botanical garden has a hut in shade where sabal palm thatch doesn't last, so just maybe the synthetic might be a reasonable substitute.

Fla. climate center: 100-119 days>85 F
USDA 1990 hardiness zone 9B
Current USDA hardiness zone 10a
4 km inland from Indian River; 27º N (equivalent to Brisbane)

Central Orlando's urban heat island may be warmer than us

I think that this is a major advantage in using this product.

That, and fire resistance.  In a short period of time, Cheeca Lodge in the Keys suffered a devastating fire due to a tiki hut's thatched roof, and a big hotel on Key Biscayne had its own tiki hut fire, fortunately didn't have to shut down for reconstruction.

Looks good...almost too good.

The texture and color are spot on. IMG_2722.thumb.jpg.0c28f7466bc3af63a307bc7d91c9aacf.jpg
