'Open Garden' program 2019 Darwin, Australia

greysrigging

Recommended Posts

This 'dry season', there is an Open Gardens scheme where dedicated Top End of the Northern Territory gardeners open up their properties for the general public to peruse. The 3rd one on the program was opened up this weekend and it certainly didn't disappoint ! I used to think my own back yard was sorta ok, but when visiting these magnificent yards.... well, very much jealous.... haha

2019 Program over 5 months

A feature of the yard was the magnificent mature Sealing Wax Palms ( Cyrtostachys renda ).  An equatorial lowland species native to South East Asia, these ones are thriving in a suburban back yard environment. They do very well in Darwin providing they receive copious 'dry season' watering.

Visited some more gardens that are part of the 2019 Open Gardens program, this time in the picturesque town of Batchelor, about 100klm ( 60 miles ) south of Darwin. Beautiful Sunday morning with the overnight temps below 70f for the first time this dry season.
Batchelor has a fascinating pioneering past, then a major airbase during WW2 with USA bombers and Australian fighters conducting raids on Japanese forces to the north, and post war, the discovery of Uranium at Rum Jungle lead to the worlds largest Uranium mine ( closed in 1971 ) Much of the town today was built to house the mine workforce, quaint old tropical style elevated houses with open louvered windows for airflow. Manicured green gardens complete with huge old shady trees is a feature of the town. Being 60 miles inland from the coast means it doesn't suffer from tropical cyclones which regularly cull large trees in Darwin.
So here are some photos I took yesterday.
This house was once the residence of the Deputy Mine Manager

This weekends Open Garden belongs to my friends Anna and Sharky, ( the Desert Rose enthusiasts of another thread )
They have a stunning collection of potted plants, and specialize in Adenium ( Desert Rose )50160312_526661521175174_2525283952202088448_n.jpg.09aa4fba0d67cb0a832024c01f918878.jpg50226223_2013708082038506_5240644005665964032_n.jpg.44334ee7b6121a90b9b752c7ed229e6b.jpg50236811_364803197640326_1455946333696294912_n.jpg.b8c8979235f1010d49c802ec051bc7ef.jpg50434548_1203879426428401_2848156877433339904_n.jpg.57c63c863c31ffa89e72df1d5ff58c5d.jpg50530182_2209020579336461_3954218162832015360_n.jpg.d3e65bec2853637f859636dfdb3893b3.jpg60973361_289603428585763_4080145285395775488_n.jpg.f3cb77ad86af4d40c518dd11c2e78633.jpg61203637_2423580271198805_2860302757183619072_n.jpg.1cb88083a8a645eac9764e78215a5ae8.jpg
Among Darwin gardeners, the Bat Plant ( Tacca chantrieri and Tacca integrifolia ) are held in mystical awe, by those who are not successful growing them ( me )
Healthy flowering specimens confer extreme bragging rights on local Social Media gardening pages....

Have to agree, anyone who can grow nice Tacca sp. ( Bat plants ) has something to brag about a bit.  Adenium look fantastic. Really like how they're arranged. Just at the right height to admire up close.

This weekends  Open Garden is a tropical Cottage style premises ( ie color and flowers that is not that common in Darwin. The City of Palmerston is about 20-25 klm south of Darwin City and this property is right up on top of a natural rocky escarpment that is difficult to cultivate. The owner is all about flowers..... good on her !

A fairly typical elevated tropical style Darwin house
Datura is not a common species in the Northern Territory, not least reason being its hallucinogenic properties... ( hippies and alternative weirdos have died from ingesting this plant in Australia. ). This is the first one I have seen in an NT garden. Naturally I have asked for some seeds... lol. Pretty scented flowers.61781199_446210499476569_2777576717785497600_n.jpg.4d2f7109874ce7c6948c9717104467f9.jpg61381528_850219542014172_6599425435958771712_n.jpg.eb315dad935fd8d7408f248f42508ee9.jpg62151763_775115026223097_4211212603344551936_n.jpg.951b1da26112688815e9d02a72efaba3.jpg
Lots of flowering plants including roses... ( not a fan myself..... they are out of climate zone in Darwin and imo are too much work for too little return.

Another 'Open Garden' this weekend on the corner of a very busy Darwin Intersection ( Lee Point Rd and McMillans Rd ). Driven past nearly every day over 40 years and never knew this gem was here....

The yard was severely damage during last years Cyclone Marcus..... remarkable recovery. I particularly liked the use of potted plants to fill in spaces...... stunning variety of beautiful tropical species.
The yard has an old feature native Top End tree called a 'Milkwood' ( Alstonia actinophallya ). this knarly old specimen has lots of ferns, bromeliads and orchids attached to its rough corky bark. Looks fantastic !

Wonderful experience discovering local gardens that you weren't aware of. They are out there!

Last weekends 'Open Garden' was a rural property out at Humpty Doo ( haha yes its a real place name ) The owners are Bromeliad specialists who have weekend market stalls around Darwin. they also grow a selection of traditional indonesian tropical fruits and vegetables.
With the seasonal 'Dry' really biting deep in the month of July, I noted their property really needed a decent drink ( several rainless months now after a failed 'Wet' ) and its all individual bore water out this way....the Aquifer is very low and there is a possibility of bores running dry if next 'Wet' is late.
Also, showing off this type of garden during the 'Dry' when many gingers, heliconias, tumerics and the like are dormant....hmmm   would've been better in April rather than July.
Still, it was pretty good.....
The Broms were a feature

They had several exotic fruit trees under cultivation.....its a sandy loam soil out here so it hard to keep up the water during the 'Dry'

Particularly the poor old Fragipanis.... mind you they always look like this during the 'dry' without water. the first rains and they spring back life ( and flower better after water stress )

Today's 'Open Garden' is by far the best example of a tropical paradise I have ever seen in Darwin ! Simply stunning the variety of plants and the simple yet elegant garden plan that has created a slice of suburban jungle.
The suburb of Ludmilla is one of the older settled areas of Darwin, and the house blocks are large by today's standards at 1/4 acre. And this area was once remnant rain forest and has some of the deepest and fertile soils in the region
The sort of garden anyone in the tropics would love to have....

The owners seem to have cracked the code of successfully growing under story plants beneath their palms.

This weekends 'Open Garden' focused on Northern Territory natives ( a euphenism for "there's no way I'm gunna spend money watering 5 acres during the seasonal 5 month drought.... " ) Fair enough.... I'd most likely do the same thing.
The Top End Native Plant Society ran some stalls selling plants, which proved very popular among the visitors,
As we move into August, we can feel a slight change in the air... bit more humidity creeping in, although the first storms are still 2 months away.
Total Fire Bans in place this weekend....very windy and 34c-35c ( mid 90's ) forecast for the Darwin Rural districts.
The owners of this property bought into the 'palm boom' of the late '80's early '90's ( as we all did ), but have slowly converted their property into Territory Native trees and shrubs.

Barely a blade of greenery....

The neighbours still have palms... local Carpentarias. Note that these appear to not be getting supplamental dry season watering....They prefer damp feet but can handle the seasonal 'dry'.

Full marks to the owners for controlling introduced weed species ie Buffel Grass and Gamba Grass which pose serious fire hazards in the Darwin Rural areas.
Native plants for sale...

A garden / nursery opened to the public today out in the Darwin rural area at Humpty Doo,
Territory Exotics and Watergardens. They're right into Broms, Cordylines, Orchids, Aroids of all types, Vines, Water lilies, etc. Many of their plants really are exotic to the Darwin region and they had a few that tempted me to open the wallet...lol !

Territory Exotics and Watergardens. They're right into Broms, Cordylines, Orchids, Aroids of all types, Vines, Water lilies, etc. Many of their plants really are exotic to the Darwin region and they had a few that tempted me to open the wallet...lol !

That's Tonya's place, she's got a good collection of stuff there. She and I have been trying to get Victoria amazonica going but nothing gets to maturity.

That's a shame.... how spectacular would it be on your lagoon ? What would the reasons be for not surviving do you think. Superficially a similar climate to its native origins. Biological ? Climatic ?

Haven't been able to work it out. Tonya and I have tried several times but they germinate fast, grow for a while, then fade away after a few small surface leaves. She even got in some larger plants but they also faded away. Don't know if you know Dave Wilson (Aquagreen in Humpty Doo), he's an aquatic plant specialist and has given up trying as well. We're waiting for someone to work it out, give it a try. There's something we've overlooked, you might just find it.

^^ Got me curious now....gunna have to read up on it a bit.....seems the Botanical Gardens in colder climes are successful. No doubt they can perfectly control air temps, humidity, water temps, nutrients, bugs and pests etc. Outdoors Top End can still be pretty harsh re all of the above I'm guessing....

The last 'Open Garden' of 2021 ( again disrupted by Covid restrictions )
This suburban Stuart Park ( an older inner suburb of Darwin ) property was built post WW2 and pre Cyclone Tracy 1974 ).
A magnificent example of an  'Old Darwin'  garden, set on a hilly quarter acre block. This part of Darwin was former monsoon vine forest pre settlement and has some of the better soil profiles in the Darwin suburban region.....oh and 72" rain per annum certainly helps !
