How Long Do Yucca Seeds Last?

I have some old Yucca rostrata seeds from a year or two ago and have them soaking in water, most sank over time, does anyone think it would be worth a shot trying to germinate them?

Id say ..if they sink, give 'em a shot.  Certainly doesn't hurt.

Have heard differing opinions about just how long seed remains " alive" post- harvest. Some have said " a few years.." Others have suggested longer... May also depend on the species, and how it / where it has evolved ( desert sp. may produce longer-lived seed, vs seed produced by species in wetter climates )  Other factors, ie: how they are / were stored can also effect how long the seed retains it's viability.

Give it a shot. I’ve had 7-8y/o Yucca brevifolia seeds, stored in a shed, forgotten about, germinate before.

Awesome, good to know. Do you know if it is good to put these into a community pot to germinate them?

It’s benificial to do so. The soil needs to be slightly moist at almost all times for about 4 weeks. You should see them starting to break the surface then, provided it is around 70 degrees or higher where they are germinating. I would wait until the each have 2-4 “leaves” to separate into individual planting locations, in well draining soil.

How is the the weather where you live? Are you propagating them indoors? Trunking yuccas need a cool down winter before germination. If it’s hot outside year round, I would put the seeds in the refrigerator for a week or two first to have a better chance of gwemination or so.

Better chance of *Germination if so* should be the ending of that sentence.

Our Winters get cold, Fall/Springs are warm most of the time, and Summers are hot. I had these in the garage, so they definitely got exposure to some cool tempatures. I was planning on germinating these indoors, but I might put them out in a greenhouse tomorrow.

Perfect. I think either way you’d be fine. Good luck! They’re fun :)

This is the one I split in half, I guess each half is growing roots?

It looks that way. I’ve never split them. That is intersting. Looks like you may have double that weed investment! :)

Looks like one came up, I'll give the other some time, but this may be all I get! I'm happy with it though.
