The Extravaganza is heading to the west coast of Florida... Searle Brothers Nursery, Inc. and The Rainforest Collection® are bringing the plant sale experience to the Naples Zoo during the second weekend of April. This is a first time event. It has been in the planning stages since the summer of last year. After many years of presenting the extremely popular Key West Plant Sale, if was decided to look for a venue on the west coast. The major details have been worked out, but some of the minor ones are still being planned and theorized. The sales area will be in the parking lot, near the main entrance to the Zoo. How the plants will be set up, arranged, etc. is still completely in theory as this is a new sale.

The purpose of this topic is two-fold: One is the obvious notification of the sale, but the other is to get information, ideas, etc. about what plant material should be selected and brought over. We have been gathering intel from various sources of what plants are needed in Naples and we have many ideas already, but I am sure Forum members can add to the list. Palms will be (naturally) a main focus of the sale but we are also planning to bring a selection of Crotons and Bromeliads. Flowering Trees, Shrubs and other exotics will probably find their way onto the trailers.

- If anyone has any suggestions on plant groups, genera, species or cultivars they would like to see brought over for sale, please post them here or send me a PM or an email.

As new details come forward I will try and post them. It is not only what to bring, but how many, what size and so on. I will post the list of plants as soon as it is completed. It will be exciting to see how it all fits together.

Thank you, that would be nice and extremely helpful! being our first year, we don't really know what to expect as far as customer turnout, species of palms sizes, etc. So in another words, we will fill the truck and trailer up with all kinds of goodies and hopefully for those that come out will leave with something.

Based on our recent Key West Sale last month and the Extravaganza Sale that just ended......people are in a buying frenzy for my material. We look forward to coming over!!!

We have been getting specific requests and interest into different plant groups, in regards to what material to bring over for the sale. Palms in all sizes, some common, some rare. There has been a lot of interest in Tropical Flowering Trees, some species but mostly on sizes and flower colors. Certain natives across different plant groups.

Keep the messages coming, I will see if we are able to bring that particular plant, common or rare, interesting, familiar, or weird.

The plant selection for the Naples sale is still in the planning stages. I was out at the nursery today and photographed a couple groups of palms. From these groups, not all, but the majority may be brought over for the sale. We went around the nursery looking at various plants, thinking, deciding, theorizing, planning, and every thought process in between. There is a lot to bring to the sale, it just comes down to what pot size and how many of each size will fit in the trucks and trailers. One key point so far is to keep the selection as varied and mixed as possible, while including as many different palms as we can carry.

What tents do we bring, what will the weather be like, how will the booth be arranged, are all theory at this point. We do know there should be plenty of space and easy access to it. The Naples Zoo has already been spreading the word on the sale, online, flyers, etc. and they expect a big turnout for their Free Saturday for county residents, the Saturday before on April 6th. They will certainly see the sale info then.

- A grouping of full sun, cold tolerant and native palms that were selected so far. They may not all make it to the Zoo, depends on how they all fit in the space allotted. Exclude the tall Hydriastele dransfieldii on the left there, he is part of the landscape and not in a pot.

- Down the shadehouse sidewalk, a rough selection has been done. Many of the palms may go, but they probably won't all fit in the big trailer. We shall see.

- The process of selecting the small palms for the tables, a focal point of any sale, has begun. We really have the space for any amount of tables, so Jeff will start with the plants and figure out the table amount last. We definitely plan on bringing some big stuff, shock and awe, as it were. We got the space and we are getting the interest, whether by phone, text, email or message. (B) The scene might look different from the 'Ganza, as the white tent was already taken down and moved, as we figure on how many structures to bring.

- A few more shots down the sidewalk. Again, most will probably not make it onto the trailers, plus even more may be pulled. Poor Alocasia. I must have picked him up three times, it was windy today.

- As time gets closer to the sale, we will have more and more of the selection ironed out. It will be flexible, so anything can be added, even at the last minute, so keep sending in the requests. When items become 'for sure' I will try and get them posted.

I have been getting questions about how to get to the Zoo. The directions are straight forward on their website, Getting Here. They do mention, if using GPS, to enter the Zoo's entire address...

1590 Goodlette Road N, Naples FL 34102

... instead of searching for the Zoo, as it may lead you to a different location.

- A general map of the area, with the pin marking the Zoo's location. Golden Gate Parkway is the main way via I-75, it is exit 105. During the visit back in November, the trip from I-75 to the Zoo was fast, and that was during the week. If you need addition directions, you can post them here or send them to me in a PM. I am not familiar with some of the more intricate areas of Naples, but I do know people who are.

The location of the sale will be on the lawn and grass area out in front of the Gift Shop, between the Gift Shop and the Parking Lot. I haven't see the spot myself, but I have been told that is easy to access and along the main traffic route to the Zoo entrance.

- I found a map of the Zoo. In the lower left corner, you can see the Gift Shop and the Main Entrance to the Zoo. It gives an idea of where the sale will be. The tree symbols on the map represent key botanical features within the Zoo, if you also plan to visit the interior. As mentioned on the flyer, attending the sale is free, but separate admission to the zoo is required.

Sale prep continues unabated, with the majority of the plant selection taking place this week. Palms are mostly done along with the Crotons. The other plant groups are being assembled as requests from collectors and organizations keep coming in. Many of the individual requests have focused on Palms and Flowering Trees. Enthusiasts from the area have shown excitement at the prospect of the sale as a west coast extension of the Extravaganza. The actual plant availability will remain fluid up until loading is complete. There is always that last minute phone call that gets a certain species tucked on board somewhere, even if I have to put it next to me with a seat belt.

I have the draft copies of both the Palm and Croton lists. They are early drafts and may be changed, added-to, etc. at any time. They are not as extensive as those from the 'Ganza, but I will process them and get them online as soon as I can.

- The grouping of Palms shown earlier has grown, no pun intended. The majority were still elsewhere around the nursery, including inside the shadehouse. The on and off-again rain from today was being annoying enough to dissuade one from taking many photos. The assortment of sale gear and equipment was growing on its own, including some newer tarps, tent frames and the 'white tent' itself was partially reborn.

- One of the early trailer loads of tropical plants for the sale. It is more of a sample, with quantities being worked out later in the week.

The first draft, and possibly the only version of the Croton list I will have available is posted over at Palmpedia:

Link: http://www.palmpedia.net/forum/threads/the-naples-palm-tropical-plant-sale.5995/

The list can change a great deal between now and this weekend. It is about 85% complete, with more additions possible, based on transportation space. If I know of anything to add, I will post it.

I have the first draft of the Palm & Cycad list ready for viewing over at Palmpedia. It numbers 149 taxa and is complete, as of today. There is a lot a depth among size groups. There is a good chance more will be added, either species or sizes, depending on available truck and trailer space. I would place the list at 90% complete. Last minute add-ons are always possible.

Today, I went through the plants pulled for the sale and found an entire group of Palms that were not on the list. They were mostly full sun palms. I didn't bring a copy home, but they number about 20 species. They were getting trimmed and moved over to the staging area seen above.

We looked over a few strong 'maybe' plants for the sale. I added their sign cards to the pile in case there was trailer space, as we load everything tomorrow. I will not be able to check the topic, PM's or emails during the day tomorrow so any last minute requests can be sent to Jeff, via his phone (954) 658-4317.

- So it begins... After a morning of compiling plants, writing tags and gathering sale stuff we started to load it all. Palmness in its trailer-carried form.

- Some of the larger items were loaded last, so they didn't have to be carried far. Jeff gives the finger, the index finger that is. He was pointing or signaling something.

It all got loaded. It was tight and involved a lot of double-stacking and even some California stacking. Met all the requests that we got in time, or those that could be filled. Didn't have any Double Coconuts to bring, but oh well. If you plan on attending, see ya over the weekend!
