Saw dust, ways of utilization.

I have removed a large pine tree from my garden. The whole operation caused a big heap of coarse saw dust. Any advices on the best way to be utilized in my garden (compost, mulch  etc) are welcome. Thanks.

I would use the sawdust as a normal mulch and spread it uniformly over your garden beds.  This will cause an additional demand for nitrogen (N) as the sawdust decomposes, so add a little more fertilizer as well.

I would mix it in a compost heap if you have one, if not then put it all in it's own pile to decompose a bit first before you use it.

I'm not sure but I think that pine dust has some toxins in it thich are best leached out or broken down a bit first before using.

I had some fall into a little garden pond years ago and it killed the fish.

I have actually used it as Darold has said with no apparent problems but I spread it everywhere very thinly.

Cheers Steve

It is not dead, it is just senescence.
