Trimming Livistona saribus

Botanicus

Recommended Posts

The first time I saw L. saribus at Selby Gardens I fell in love with the amazing teeth lining the petioles, I think it is one of the most striking features of this palm. On my property I now have a couple taraw palms starting to make some real trunk and I want to prune them in a way that shows off that wonderful armament. I've only taken off a very few of the lowest leaves (when brown of course), but want to be consistent in how I trim them going forward. Does anyone here have any advice/suggestions?

Cheers,

Flat...level with the ground...just below the bottom tooth. I use a reciprocal saw with a pruning blade.

Find a large pair of loppers with the longest handles you can. Or use a pole saw. Wear head &
eye protection and elbow length leather welder's gloves.

Botanicus:

Check out this L. saribus  (green petiole)here in Jacksonville, nearing 10 years in the ground from a 7 gal. size. Just trimmed about 3 weeks ago. What a beauty.

Livistona saribus looks messy in the natural form. And they lose these boots over time to create a smooth trunk. Not worth the trouble to me.
