A toasty 86F at 11:38AM ..on the way to the lower 90s later..  Still on track to flirt w/ 100F Friday  and/or Sat. before anther big, but quick cool down ..which might not be all that much of a cool down if the trough forecast for the first part of next week doesn't dig as far south as some forecasts had suggested..

Warms back to the mid- 80s ( current forecast ) by next weekend / Easter Sunday..  We'll see which direction things go after that..

PNA headed back into positive territory,  right after mid month..

pna.gefs.sprd2.png

Plus some pretty bullish model runs.. ( This morning's 06Z run. Some others have been about as aggressive w/ the heat as well. Other runs keep things unsettled and cool -ish )

49011515_Screenshot2022-04-06at11-34-10GFSModel.png.0b9385b2cad092288b4e854b66985097.png

..Could mean some serious heat ahead for much of the west as April closes out. Close to 105F in the Central Valley / Close to 100 in parts of the Bay Area would be pretty crazy ..If .. this scenario were to occur..   We'll see..

73f. First over seventy day we’ve had. It’s been a cold spring and lots more far below normal temps on the way. Not sure if summer ever is going to show up.

Think that's hot?  ..Not even close..  Keep in mind It is April 7th, and many of these places don't see this kind of heat until ....Late July - at the earliest..  Hi-pitched ding of smashed records has been ringing in my ears all day..  will add them later..   And there's another day to go out there. Hotter here tomorrow and Sat.

While things will cool off dramatically for all next week.. Still signs the heat returns after that, California esp..

@GottmitAlex I notice your humidity is showing at 1% again. Surely that can't be correct for April? I even remember you posting some readings showing 1% back in like February and March. I know SoCal is dry as a bone, but 1% humidity in spring is ridiculous. Even in July-August that would be crazy, or am I wrong? Maybe your air really is that dry? The lowest I have ever seen my humidity get here I think is 7% in July 2018 on a 35C / 95F day following 6 weeks of zero rainfall. My current outdoor humidity right now is 39% at 4pm.

@UK_Palms It is bone dry.

And our Santa Ana winds make it worse.

It's 55 F. , cooler than normal for an afternoon, April 9 th temp.,after 3-4 inches of rain and an end to the beginning of some drought conditions, so I will take it as they are promising 70's soon.

Some perspective on how unusual the heat this week in CA., ..particularly parts of S. Cal.  has been:

Dry Dry Dry, windy and plumes of yellow dust.  Highest tree pollen count EVER in all of Houston's recorded history....not just broken but shattered by a longshot

Some are dubbing it OAKPOCALYPSE 2022, worst allergy season of all time possibly due to last year's record freeze and the current drought.

“Typically, our highest oak will be 3,000 to 4,000. I did find one year with 5,000. This year we’re getting 9,000 to 10,000,” Utz said. “I count the previous 24 hours, so what I’m counting is what you felt yesterday”

Not particularly warm or cold here right now, although April in general so far has definitely been on the colder side. The nights have been a LOT colder than average and there has been a notable absence of 'warm' days. The highest so far this year is still only 21C / 70F back in March, so I am hoping to get some proper warmth in the next week or two.

A warm 27C / 80F day would be nice, but I will probably be waiting until mid-May at least to experience that sort of warmth again. The outlook could certainly be better, but maybe my expectations are just too high for this latitude. Either way it also looks to be pretty darn dry over the next few weeks. Possibly zero rainfall over the next 2-3 weeks.

1171251785_Screenshot2022-04-11at00_13_55.thumb.png.ca79c0c61411c007900fa577883aa831.png

The high pressure block is setting up again right on cue now that we are into April. The moist Atlantic airflow is cut off by the drier continental air masses and the cold sea around the UK further suppresses precipitation. Anything that does fall will be so light that it evaporates before it even lands. High pressure firmly in control moving forward.

18_138_mslp500.jpg.621f1c1a86dcb0fd543be5839a515be2.jpg

This setup will drag up Saharan sand again, just like we had a few weeks back. There is still a lot of sand left here on the cars, buildings, streets etc. I will post further about this Saharan sand tomorrow in my other UK weather thread. If the air is being transported directly from North Africa next week, it could get fairly warm come midweek, possibly mid 20's C in the London area. Fingers crossed. It probably won't exceed 21-22C though (low 70s F). It still feels like we are transitioning between winter and spring kind of.

A toasty, but not sizzling 88f at 3:56PM under clear and windy skies..  After a two - day break in the 70s tomorrow and Wednesday, flirting w/ 100 again by next Monday ( Current WX Underground forecast ).  Could see a low of 45-47F tomorrow night as this windy, but dry storm heads east. Lows of 60 or greater return by Friday or Saturday.

Speaking of dust, some eye candy for the Storm junkies.. ( and a " Hurry up and get to July already " thought from those of us here ) Some new stuff from Mike Olbinski

Ten years of chasing ...dust:

A rare sight in April:  Morning lows in the lower 40s..  While it brought no rain, yesterday's cold frontal passage brought Dew Points that crashed below zero for a good portion of the day, leaving behind some cool air as winds died off late last night.

If Phoenix, at Sky Harbor,  manages to bottom out below 50F, it will be the first time since 2011 they have seen such a morning low in mid - April.

One more morning in the upper 40s overnight, then back to the upper 50s/ 60s later..

19C / 66F in Guildford at 2pm. Not as warm as I would like it to be but beggars can’t be choosers at 51N latitude in April. 21C / 70F is being forecast on Friday. The dry theme continues as well, so May could be a rough month for wildfires at this rate.

A beautiful day today, with a bright sunny top of 26c. Autumn is a nice time of year in Perth, cooler nights for sleeping but still plenty of lovely days with no wind, perfect for getting out on the ocean. Unfortunately today I'm at work but I'm looking forward to the next four days of enjoying the weather. We could use some rain but no other complaints.

Currently sitting at 21C / 70F here near Guildford.

Quite a lot of variation across London. Most stations are comfortably above 20C / 68F at 2pm. A couple of 23-24C / 75F readings, but that is likely inflated by a degree or two. It’s hard to say as multiple microclimates exist within the metropolitan area. Either way, it isn’t too bad for mid-April at 51N. Dry as a bone too.

I have since risen to 22C / 72F here, which is my warmest day of the year. It better exceed that tomorrow as this time last year we had already had 26C / 78F in late March. This spring and April has been a mixed bag so far.

I have finally broken the 75F barrier here with the current temperature at 24.5C / 76F in the shade in my yard at 3pm. Some stations in the Guildford area are showing 26-27C / 79F but I doubt they are accurate.

Guildford is definitely running warmer than London though where the temps are about 23C / 73F. They are closer to the coast whereas I am further inland and cloud cover rolled into London sooner from the east coast. It has been clear sunny skies all day here and it is only just starting to cloud over now.

Gradually cooling down now but the warmth should continue over the coming days. Very dry here at the moment as well, so I have had to thoroughly hand water everything last night, especially the containerised stuff, which took me 2 hours to do.

The Abyssinian banana may have to go back in the ground this weekend and get a trim too. Summer is definitely on its way now…

We’ve been getting a few single digit nights lately as high pressure zones have passed directly overhead. Coldest was 5.1C yesterday morning. Yesterday was a stunning day with blue skies and 22C. A bit cloudier today after a min around 8C. Max of around 19C possible then afternoon showers. Along with the shorter days we are well on the descent into winter.

Last week about 300km to my east they received around 200mm in the space of 3 days which cut the coastal east west highway. I’m glad we missed that one.

Weathered coming full circle.

We have been at 10C for the past two nights with highs in the upper 20's (C).

They're calling for warm/hot weather again for next week..

Currently 23C / 73F at 4pm here. Slightly cooler than yesterday’s high, but the past 3 consecutive days have now exceeded 21C / 70F. Exceptionally dry as well here still with only 1mm of rainfall over the past 2 weeks. Humidity down to 29% this afternoon. Still chilly at night though under the clear skies.

How warm did you get in Manchester this afternoon? @Ryland

Current temperature is 13.0ºC which promises a warm afternoon on the way.  Yesterday @UK_Palms we had 21.3ºC, the warmest of the year so far and the first day to exceed 20ºC.  Forecasts suggest today will be cooler but still nice, around 18ºC.

I have maxed out at 21.2C / 70F here today. There has been a noticeable decline in daytime temperatures over the past two days though as more normal/average temperatures return again next week. The jury is out on how much rain will potentially fall next week. It could be a fair bit or it could be zilch, nothing. It is still very, very dry here right now. Humidity was down to 16% at 4pm this afternoon but it is now up to 22%. I am hand watering potted palms and plants daily now already, since it is both dry and relatively warm. The garden and allotment is turning into a dust bowl again like it does most years nowadays in April-May. I wonder whether it will be a very dry summer again like 2013 and 2018?

32.8C / 91F reached in southern Spain which is the hottest in Europe this year so far, excluding the 35C / 95F recording in the Canary Islands, which technically aren't in Europe.

It actually went slightly above that and on 17th April Málaga broke their all-time April record as they reached 33.1°C at the official AEMET AP Station (I see someone called MetGibraltar stated it too) so they finally settled the new record 3 days ago!

The craziest temp showing today's extreme anomaly is at the Sierra Nevada station at almost 3000m altitude, they had a high of -4.0°C at midnight and the low so far has been -10.7°C recorded about two hours ago, 2 days ago they had a high of almost 10°C and now look, very crazy temps!

@Ryland

Nice, it's really good to hear that. Your palms must be basking! :greenthumb:

Currently 17C / 63F and sunny at 2pm here. The rainfall never materialised yesterday, which means I have now gone 13 days since I last had a single drop fo rain. I have only recorded 1mm over the past 17 days now and across the entire month of April so far (20 days in) I have picked up just 4mm / 0.2 inches. I doubt there will be any more rainfall this month now looking at the forecast. It is as dry as a bone here and I am hand-watering everything every other day.

Temperatures are on the cool side moving forward it seems, certainly below average next week. That means colder, drier air coming from Scandinavia and northern Europe, as opposed to any Atlantic airflow. That combined with a cool sea surface temp (11C) means it totally suppresses any precipitation. There is effectively a precipitation block/buffer in effect for eastern & southeast England, which is becoming a recurring theme in April now. Very difficult to get any meaningful rain during this part of the year.

There has been plenty of rainfall coming off the Atlantic in recent days, which has soaked Ireland, Wales & western England, however the weather front cannot cross the midlands due to the blocking effect. You can see all the rain just stuck out there in the Atlantic with no way of reaching London or southeast England.

Even cloud cover is suppressed largely. This seems to happen every April nowadays, but can happen at any time, like in January 2022 and November 2019. Should an Atlantic system manage to make it across in late April / early May, I doubt it will be capable of dropping any precipitation. Anything that does fall will be so light that it won't be measurable.

@Alicante I stopped posting about the wildfires as they had died down slightly over the past 2-3 weeks, although some were still happening here, however this particular one yesterday is literally 7-8 miles northwest of my location. It's roughly a 15 minute drive to Hawley lake from my location where there were 6 separate fires raging yesterday.

I only reached 16C / 61F here today and I am already down to 13C / 55F at 10pm. It has been pretty windy today as well, which has caused the fires to spread further. There are now multiple fire fronts being fought across southern England. I haven't bothered covering these fires lately (and there has been loads of fires) but now the forests are starting to ignite too. I haven't had any rainfall for 17 days now and only 4mm / 0.2 inches so far this April. There won't be any more rain this month either looking at the forecast. Dry as a bone.

The situation is becoming critical. As I said, multiple fire fronts currently active with some over 10km in length. This first fire is 3 miles northwest of my house...

Reports of more fires coming in as I type this. I guess this is what climate change looks like in the flesh. A definitive trend of dry springs for the UK. The past 3 April's (including this one) have all seen less than 0.2 inches of rain here. By my estimate, 5-10% of UK land has been incinerated by fires so far this spring. That is a massive amount of land in the grand scheme of things and increasing by the day. There are active fires just 3 miles from my location.

I have had to edit this as there is now a fire in the woods just 200m from my house that 4 fire engines and a helicopter are currently tackling. I will try to get photos but police have closed the road off. Helicopters currently flying overhead dropping water. They are collecting water at Broadwater lake which is 2 miles southeast of me. The fire is currently out of control and houses are being evacuated. Another fire is raging just to the southwest. More updates to come.
