I've grown them in ground to 4 ft tall in the Phoenix,AZ desert and they will do fine till we get a mid 20's freeze (once every several years) which kills them along with Royal Poinciana.Here's my newest batch,just sprouted, to give it another go.

They should work in California. I know they grow them in Southern Spain and in the Canaries
