probably just general nikau-was the palm planted on purpose  or just self sown.Really  no such thing as typical Auckland form as I know and have local forms in my area near the size of little barrier but i know what you are saying  .I live Laingholm and surrounded by nikau

Yea there were a couple that had been planted there. You're probably right about it being a general nikau then... I did take a quick photo on my phone but it doesn't really do it justice... Any way cheers for the info.

That's interesting. These ones were in Apollo drive, Albany. I haven't been there in over a year or so but i'm keen to check them out again....Yea I mostly dig out small silver ferns growing around the property and pot them or transplant them. Iv'e never grown from spores so I don't know anything about that side of growing them.

Picked up some Nikau seeds from the forest today.  First time I've recognised what was lying on the ground right next to the track. These flower stems must have fallen ages ago, the fruits had all rotted away. The mother plant high above had just flowered again. The forest was Pukemokemoke, which is notable for having the southernmost naturally occurring Kauri in the centre of the island.

Half of these were labelled Chattamica and half Cheesemani i.e Baueri. Probably grown in the same conditions by same supplier and I was having trouble telling them apart.
