I didn't really know what I was doing with this seed...  I planted it in 18" deep pots... Last week I ran across the thread about Kris' challenge and saw the photo of how to germ this plant...  Unfortunately all of mine but 1 had rotted in the bottom of the pots...  I was only able to salvage this one!  I potted it up yesterday and hopefully it will take root!

Dear William   :)

you have acted very wisely of giving full care for the one which survived...and iam glad you have shared your knowledge with all of us..instead of starting a new thread all by your own.since every one in this world are bit lazy like me they want every thing under one post or one thread..so your participation will certainly help others who are trying this out..

And by the way william if they don't make it ! don't worry next year this time remind me for fresh seeds,i will air-mail few seeds to you as gifts from india & that's a promise !

Since all the borassus seeds that i had, have all been sent to their respective destinations..so i have no stock & the season is usually from july to september each year.

thanks & love,

Kris  :)

Thanks Kris!  This is a very interesting thread.  I think I had the fruit many times (canned variety).  The Borassus fruits looks like apples.  Too bad we can't replace our Washies with Borassus palms.

Dear Kris & friends

A couple of questions.

At what temperature the seeds germinate more quickly? .

How long it takes on average to germinate?

Thanks. Toni  :)

Dear Toni  :)

the germination part of these seeds are not difficult.if you are in your spring or early summer the temperature is far sufficient to these seeds to germinate.place these seeds in a medium placed in a dark room and preferably in your garage, kitchen shelves or terrace top store rooms..

But once germinated you must visit the treads of Alicehunter2000 on these seeds...but for us in south india we just throw seeds in loose sandy soil in our rainy season and during early summer or late spring we see the sprout..

but i suppose gernination will take place within a months time but the leaf sprout will be visible only 4 to 6 months depends on the heat in your climate !

Kris  :)

Dear Kris  :)  :)  :)

Hallelujah. Today has germinating a Borassus seed (small). in 18 days :P  I sent you an email.

I re-read the post again, And I read, what I asked in the previous message..

I put the seed directly into the ground. I made a nini greenhouse with heating. When all seeds germinated I will make a report.

Best. Toni  :)

Sad news on my 1 Borassus hybrid strap leaf seedling. I wanted to try and keep it a little dryer in its huge pot while I was on vacation and ended up frying it under the plastic. The entire leaf is brown, but there was a hint of green at the base.

Now we have had 2 straight days of torrential rain....so what little life there was left may now have been snuffed. I will wait. If there is one thing I have learned with this variety is that it will suprise you with its ability to stay alive. This will be about the third time that I have thought it was dead..........I'm still not holding my breath however.

All my Kris seeds appear to be doing well as they are under the eve of my house in pure perlite. We've had like 10 inches of rain in the past 2 days.......unbelievable. Thank God for the pure sand here......if it were clay, I would be in real trouble.

Dear David  :)

iam sorry to hear that news but lets pray that even this time around it makes it.

And iam very happy to hear your soil around the house is more sandy since the big mama were all collected from coastal areas which is near the sea & has a very sandy soil...so you are safe but care will be needed for say first 2 years of establishment.since nobody here water or use fertz to these little rocks(Pulmera's)..

thanks for keeping us all updated...

lots of love,

Kris  :)

Dear Toni  :)

those seeds are your babies since i gave you just seeds but you have cared and have put life into it...so you need more credit for that.

and from now on just see how Alicehunter2000 is carring out his Borassus germination work.kindly visit his thread & you can also interact in his thread and ask about your doubts...

And thanks for that beautiful still.... :)

Kris  :)

Those seeds were not given any special care or treatment.it was just placed in loose sandy soil of course grade.and alternate day watering to the pot.and this pot was placed in direct sunlight and rainfall.i.e this seed was subjected to the forces of nature without any pampering or grown in any protective enveronment.

The nature itself did all the ground work ! i must say that Borassus & Phoenix Sylversteris do grow here in south india like weeds :)

In Indonesia we called it Buah Lontar or Siwalan, normally sell on dry season during daytime, to feast the thirst. The seller will peel the fruit ala minute when we ask how many piece we would like to buy.
