Jubaea x Butia

I put a very small JxB in the ground in 2006.  It had no characteristic leaves on it before winter hit.  We had a low of 16.  It was covered with a piece of plastic to keep it's head dry.

In April one deformed spear grew out.  No spear pulls.  That's it.   No other damage.  Amazing! It's growing like a charm now.

One plant, 4' OA height

22f, multiple hours and nights below freezing

No damage

If global warming means I can grow Cocos Nucifera, then bring it on....

Ten plants, 5 gal size

15 f, 13 hrs below freezing first night, thereafter too depressed to check my hi/lo. 5 nights into the hi teens/low twenties for sure, many hours below freezing

Foliage seemed ok, but pulled spears on most. Lost 3 plants.

Several jxb f1 took 14f last year with zero burn. They were larger 95g sized palms at that time.  Jubaea of similar size nearby completely defoliated and large 5-7' trunk butia sustained 50-75% burn in comparison. These are undoubtedly superior palms to either parent.

Potted palm.  5 foot height.  Has seen 25F with no damage.  Take inside under those temps.
