Post-mortem for July 6 2018 Fry-Day

DoomsDave

Recommended Posts

It’s been seven weeks since that sudden  heat wave on July 6, 2018 and the extent of damage and potential recovery are a lot more evident.

It was, as a British client said, “rather nasty.”

Here’s my neighbor’s poor avocado tree.

Rather nasty indeed.

Bummer, Dave. I think all the palms will survive. Was that avocado tree blown down?

With most of us focusing on the effects of the extreme cold spells in our climates, this is a nasty reminder that extreme heat can be every bit as bad.

Oh yes.

The big factor was that it was early in the summer with plants still having relatively soft spring growth that hadn’t been hardened by summer’s furnace yet. The sun was directly overhead.

Nasty, rather.

Thanks for your good words and wishes!

Alas one of the Raveneas already died.

The avocado is a dwarf, just made a lot dwarfer by the damage it suffered. That poor thing lost about 3 feet (1 M) of branch in one section.

Nasty.

This summer was something else. Sorry for your loss DD.

I lost my one and only B.fenestralis.  Its leaves were toast. I mean, disintegrated to a touch. As if it were a Sci-Fi movie of sorts.

Or as the Brits would say: Bloody Hell.

Yeesh.  Of course we in Florida know real well that lots of palms can't tolerate our steam-bath summers.  We rarely get heat waves (the 100º kind) but the persistent 90s and warm to hot nights do in Howea, Trachycarpus, and lots more.

Fla. climate center: 100-119 days>85 F
USDA 1990 hardiness zone 9B
Current USDA hardiness zone 10a
4 km inland from Indian River; 27º N (equivalent to Brisbane)

Central Orlando's urban heat island may be warmer than us
