I always wanted to try sabal minor and saw palmetto, but I have had bad luck with sabal minor. Grandmas cat mawed the seedlings she tried to bring me and the one big one I bought died right away despite being planted the same way as all my flourishing plants (right now have a rhapidophyllum doing well in the same spot!). One day Ill have a fine specimen of both...one day.

Yes, the seeds are ready.

Todd, when do the saw palmetto fruits ripen for you in SC?  There are several planted around San Antonio but all of the fruits are still green.

They are all starting to ripen now. As soon as they start to darken up, harvest them or the tree rats will take them. Once the fruit are full size, they will germinate even when the fruit is still green.

Thanks Todd.  Maybe I'll try again with the fruit still green - I've tried before without success, but never had local access before.  The ones I saw yesterday here appeared to be starting to darken up as well.

@Laaz

I appreciate the advice as well.  I had always tried to wait until they were completely dark, and by that time, all of them were gone!  I grabbed a large green/black fruit yesterday and am soaking it now.

If your talking about saw palmetto, you need to let it dry out for a while. Once it's completely dried out, squeeze it real hard. You need to remove the outer egg like shell or germination will take forever.
