Which public gardens in Arizona have the best palm collections -- in terms of species array, quality of care, and design? The two most well-known are the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson.

Jason,

My personal experience.. (there may be others i haven't visited)

Best i have seen:

#1,Tohono Chul Park in Tucson ( Casa Adobes area of town) did a brief write-up here awhile back. the "Palm Canyon" display has the most palm species, but lots of other palms throughout the garden.

#2 AZ Sonora Desert Museum, far less palms that i saw but lots of other Sonoran region rarities to observe / research up close, plus the animals of course..

#3 Boyce Thompson.. Haven't made it up there myself just yet but is another great garden. Very scenic. They are supposed to be opening the new "Wallace Garden" expansion by October?, i think, anyway, The Wallace garden, formally in Scottsdale, contained a treasure trove of  very rare Cacti/ Succulents, & Legume-type Trees. Had to be re-located when the original owner passed away, and foundation set up to care for & run his garden ran out of funding..

#4 Uof A's Campus Arboretum (University of Arizona campus in Tucson) Again, lots of less common things to observe, including palms..

Sadly, the worst local Botanical Garden for palms is Desert Botanical itself.. There are only a few, smaller Brahea armata there. Lots of Washingtonia at the nearby zoo / Papago Park, if you wanted to see them..

Hope this helps.. Curious as to when you were thinking of visiting, if that is the case..
