Yellow Dragon Fruit

Anyone tried to sprout/grow yellow dragon fruit successfully? I hadn’t seen any in Miami yet until two weeks ago when a small bunch showed up at my grocery store. They disappeared quickly and there hasn’t been anymore. Luckily I bought a few and saved some of the seeds which just sprouted. Any advice? Want to ensure they make it.

Treat them like you would most other seedlings.. Keep the soil moist but not wet, and not much direct sun (bright shade. too much shade can cause them to stretch out however) until they start developing. Then slowly expose to more sun.

A lot of people make the mistake thinking Cacti seedlings will withstand the same drought / full sun conditions as mature specimens. Most want the exact opposite when tiny.  Id anticipate they'll develop fairly quickly under weather conditions there.( Some cacti seedlings can sit in their com pots for up to 3 years before really doing anything / are ready to be separated / repotted)

Good luck:greenthumb:

Three months in and these are thriving! I put some of them in a bigger pot so they had some room to grow into. Theybe been growing so fast you can notice the a change in length each day. Been so successful I sprouted some more! Very excited about these. Hoping they survive the “winter” cool down here.

Here’s an update on the yellow dragon fruit! It’s been a little more than 13 months since they sprouted. Hoping for some fruit before the end of the season! It’ll probably be next summer though.

Congrats!  :greenthumb: Pretty impressive growth for only being 13 months since these germinated.  Would agree on seeing your first flowers next year but, you never know.. as warm as it stays down there, flowers might appear sooner. Regardless, look forward to updates when the time comes.

Great progress! I really need to upgrade my trellis and replant mine in a bigger pot as well. Currently held up with a 3" thick bamboo stalk but the normal wood would be better for roots to attach and I've read keeping the trellis wet helps with it rooting onto it. I've got a Selenicereus Megalanthus orange variety I've been container growing for about 3 years but haven't seen nearly as much growth given the less favorable climate it had for 2 years. Overall height is around 5ft.

That is really cool! I want to grow the 'orange' but I think I will have to grow it from seeds because the cuttings are almost impossible to find.

Currently my dragon fruit is roasting in full sun for over a month of 100+ degree days and the older parts have formed some sort of "skin", they were always way narrower but it is pushing tons of new growth and much thicker now that it is getting more heat and less water thankfully. The column is 6ft for comparison. Please excuse my shoddy pics and stuff around the planters, still trying to unpack and get all my plants situated

Very nice:greenthumb:  Both look great.. Agree, you should see at least a few flowers ..at least on the biggest specimen.. this year.  If you get fruit, you'll have to share how the fruit tastes compared to when picked up from the store.

Actually yes! Totally forgot. I got 5 fruits last year. Two of them were a fairly good size it the other three were small. I’ve actually left them on the vine this whole time. Hoping this year will be even better.

We’re already budding! Noticed this early in the week. Very surprised because I thought I’d have to wait until mid summer. Hopefully its a sign that it’s gonna be a good year.
