PSSC JULY MEETING SATURDAY, JULY 21, 2018
TWO GARDENS IN LA JOLLA, CA
NEITHER PREVIOUSLY TOURED
POTLUCK LUNCH, BRING A DISH

Our next meeting of the PSSC will be Saturday, 21 July, 2018. Both gardens are in La Jolla (an area of San Diego) and neither has ever been toured by our group.

The first garden is at the Home of Mark Tarpin. Mark had this to say about his love for palms and the garden:

"I started growing rare palms, tropical fruits and tropical flowers in approximately 1984. My collection did not become extensive until I moved into my current residence which I have been in
for approximately 30 years. After traveling to many tropical countries I wished I could come back to San Diego and reproduce what I saw. Very few people were growing these types of products
but after reaching out to the palm society presidents past and present, rare fruit society presidents and orchid growers I have managed to accumulate a beautiful combination of palms, flowers and fruits. I have aproximately 20 species of palms and 8 to 10 species of cycads. I also have over 50 species of orchids most which are mounted to trees. In addition approximately 10 to15 different types of rare fruits and ferns are sprinkled into my garden."

The second garden is at the home of Peter and Judy Jol. Peter had this to say about his garden:

"In 1990 I started planting palms in our first home in the Clairemont district of San Diego. But, this home was no longer large enough with our two young children. So, in 1995 we moved into our
second home in the Mt Soledad area. But, my interest in the palm started at the first home while working with a friend at SDGE. He has a beautiful palm garden in Vista and after seeing it for the
first time, I was completely hooked! Most of my palms were planted at the Mt. Soledad property. Some of the more interesting palms include Archontophoenix Alexandrae, Burretiokentia hapala,
Burretiokentia dumasai, Dypsis leptocheilos, Hyophorbe lagenicaulis, Pinanga Coronata, Chambeyronia Macrocarpa “Water Melon”, Sabal mauritiiformis/yapa, Rhopalostylis purple crown
shaft and Sapida. All are large mature palms now and over 20 years old. I think my favorite is the Hyophorbe lagenicaulis which has approximately 6’ of clean trunk, a beautiful crown shaft, and 5 to 6 arching leaves. Planted against a south facing side of our home, it receives all day full sun and radiant heat. It sees very little frost if any during our mild winters and has grown to near
perfection. It flowers constantly and has produced viable seed. You will also see Plumeria cultivars, a few cycads and some Heliconias."

SO looking forward to seeing these gardens.  Growing up in Pacific Beach in the 50's, La Jolla was part of my "neighborhood".  I love a reason to return and this is a special one.  A big thanks to all who work so hard to make this happen!
