After a year, the first dragon fruit bud has appeared!

Had these guys in the ground for a year now from mature cuttings. Everyday I check them for buds but alas, only new growths have appeared. That is until today, I went to check on them right after the German win against Sweden in today's  world cup match, and to ny surprise, I happened upon the very first bud.

So today, I got two gifts. Deutschland's viktory and the first bud from my pitahaya.

I tell ya, today should have been father's day. Lol

Congrats..  keep a close eye on it as it matures. You will be surprised how fast the flowers come, especially if the weather is warm / more humid over the coming weeks. Should be a very fragrant, night time surprise when it opens.

Can't remember exactly if some are self fertile or require crossing but pollinating once it is open is simple.. I use a paint brush with a head no wider than 1" across to do all my hand pollination w/ my cacti. You will know within 5-7 days after the flower fades if pollination /fruit set was successful. Keep us updated.

Will do. Thank you. I plan to hand pollinate it. I'll keep you all abreast of the situation.

It's opening up. For a moment (20 min. ago) it resembled a Fabergé egg. You can kinda see it in the first picture.

It's opening up.very, very fast.

Successful pollination will be green. Yellowing of fruit not.

Having a different variety nearby is better. Third year here they bloom crazy.

I do have a megalanthus  (yellow variety) growing. But they still have at least another year to reach the undatus (white fleshed).  I like the white flesh ones because they are not as sweet as the others.

Don't know if it's going to make it.

Do these pictures help in finding out?

Or still too soon for a definite conclusion?

Looks good atm, but you should have a better idea in a week or so if it successfully fertilized itself. Here, the heat causes non-fertilized cacti flowers to drop within 10 days ( sometimes within a day after the flowers fade). As long as it stays firmly attached, you're good.. You'll notice the fruit starting to enlarge as well.
