Growing in the Rain

TS Alberto is scheduled to wash out Memorial Day weekend here and so far has. The past 10 days have been exceptionally rainy here so my palms and other plants have shifted to growing overdrive. I can't work outdoors during frequent downpours. Yesterday when the rain briefly cut back to a drizzle I grabbed my camera to record the start of an explosion of growth.

First off, photos my three Latania species:

More photos of our 125'x125' Garden Lot. Most of the stuff planted here is not irrigated so must be able to survive on rain and periodic hand watering.

Looking great for no irrigation, always have a great selection of palms. That's a lot of mulch you got there.  I have a long strip across the street from me that I plant out, also not irrigated. Right now everything is very happy.

It's all looking fantastic Meg! OMG the amount of hard work you"ve put in shows, and I'm sure your neighbors are convinced you"re the ‘crazy palm lady’ next door.

The contrast of the red mulch, especially when wet, certainly adds some color.

How's Tim, BTW?

More Growing in the Rain photos.

My Caribbean Garden in front of the house. Other than a couple interlopers, all these palms hail from FL down into the Caribbean and Mexico. Many of them are from genus Coccothrinax, which do very well in my alkaline soil. Also, Sabals, Pseudophoenix, Hemithrinax, Thrinax, Copernicia and Borassodendron.

Copernicia macroglossa - received as a 1g circa 2009. SO slow growing.

My famous Sabal Row. Back in 2008/2009 I tried my hand at germinating seeds and chose Sabals because they are easy and tough - causiarum, domingensis, maritima, mauritiiformis & palmetto. Who is who now is anybody's guess except that palmettos are smaller and slower than the others. In fall 2009 I planted them in a zig-zag pattern aiming for an eventual privacy barrier. The house closest to us was built in 2003/04 but was never lived in and totally abandoned when the housing bubble burst and Cape Coral real estate fell into a black hole. Someone finally bought it and moved in around 2010. Sabal Row is actually on the western edge of the vacant lot next door. When/if anyone builds on it, I hope they will keep these Sabals as a living fence.

At the end of Sabal Row, turn left and you will see the east side of my back yard jungle, an oasis of tropical palms, ferns and aroids. My husband thinks it's crowded but it is exactly what I set out for it to be.

View down Isabelle Canal from berm of vacant end. A week or so ago, Tim & I spent a couple of few remaining dry, relatively cool days removing brush and cutting down/trimming small trees that were blocking views and providing shelter for vermin.

From the top of the berm we now have a clear view of the back yard jungle, seawall and dock. Second photo shows my husband Tim pulling out debris that washed down to the end of the canal.

You have a really beautiful garden, the palms are magnificent. The red mulch is really striking, I've never seen mulch that colour before.

Lotta nice stuff Meg, but I do have a concern. Have you researched the ingredients in your red mulch? Different brands can contain some very nasty stuff which doesn't break down into the soil.

Up here in Canada red mulch is very common. Usually landscape places carry black red and natural. It’s great for keeping moisture in and weeds down but after a bad winter most gets blown away. I’m sure hurricanes do there part as well

Down here mulch decomposes faster than any windstorm.

I'll check it out. But Lowe's offered only red when we bought it for 99 cents a bag at their annual one-week mulch sale. I wonder if dyed black & brown mulches have the same issues. A gardener would have to be an idiot to use black mulch in FL. I'd prefer natural color but no one offers it for comparable money. Dyed mulches are much heavier to dump & spread. And the thought of rubber artificial mulch makes me ill.

Do a web search Meg instead of asking Lowe's, they wouldn't have a clue. Some of the goobers that these colored mulches contain are ground up pieces of treated lumber which when broken down can contaminate your soil. Here's a link. https://www.naturescapes-pa.com/why-not-to-use-dyed-mulch/

To me it does not seem her garden is contaminated. Look at the beautiful palms and other plants she has vibrantly thriving within her yard.

Was this mulch just recently set atop your garden, Meg?
