Update on the SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CORYPHA

BS Man about Palms

Recommended Posts

This is an update on the palm that the "PRA team" discovered several years back and posted. Mssrs Matty, Paul and Bob stopped by and posted this amazing find by Bob and accomplishment by Mike Edwards the owner!

I saw the owner Mike outside as I drove by and stopped to chat. He said he got it MANY years ago as a seedling at a Palm Society meeting. He said he had picked up a seedling to look from a trayful and moments later Mardi Darian swooped in and grabbed the whole tray declaring "you can't grow those"! Well, I never saw one at Mardis...

He then told me his secret! He said he barely got it up to a 1 gal size and had a Avocado tree near where this is, he said the leaves and mulch he had underneath were starting to make some warm compost, he decided to clear an area and plop the palm down right there! It wasn't rocket, but it responded well!

And then to REALLY complete his feat of zone pushing, VERY FEW places on earth, or growers can have a well grown Dydpsis decipiens 20' away across the sidewalk from a Corypha!!

Mike says welcome to any Palm peeps!

That thing is a monster. What a beautiful palm. Do you have a picture, or possibly the link to the original posting when this palm was discovered? I know it was a very nice sized specimen back then but nothing like it is now. WOW!!! Thanks for the pictures.

Impressive!

Gold Coast, Queensland Latitude 28S. Mild, Humid Subtropical climate. Rainfall - not consistent enough!

Awesome to see that!

Living in south Florida now, I can get away with just about any palm my heart desires. But having grown up in upstate NY, I remember constantly trying to get away with whatever somewhat tropical plant I could, usually to no avail. (being zone 5b, and all) It gives me a real respect for zone pushers, especially when you see them getting away with something as spectacular as this.

Former South Florida resident living in the Greater Orlando Area, zone 9b.

Constantly wishing I could still grow zone 10 palms worry-free, but also trying to appease my strange fixation with Washingtonias.

Amazing grow! There is a monster seeding here currently at Robert Beethem's residence at the entrance of Rio Claro, Costa Rica. His farm is on the North side of town where the main bridge is. There is a sign that says "jardin botanico".

Thanks for posing this update Bill. I got my hands on one years ago from Kevin Weaver (he grew from seed) but since I was lacking room in my fallbrook garden, so Nick (quinnpalms) has it in his fallbrook garden. Hopefully one day it looks like this!

  • Love both of them, he corypha and double DD!!.  You won't find that pairing in florida.  Looks like 15' overall ~2 1/2 times the height of the gentleman.

Looks happy and in quite a bit of shade... I will try to post a picture of my little corypha , its plugging along here in Fallbrook, Ca and not minding the winters at all.

Actually, I'm standing in the shade to the north of the palm. To the south and west there is no protection. It probably gets at least 6 hours of full coastal sun a day.
