Engulfed in flames, the Hawaiian Village Apartments collapsed about 4 a.m. Water gushed down North Laurel Street as firefighters worked to put out the flaming complex and residents watched with their cameras and cellphones out. The sound of propane tanks bursting filled the air.

Hundreds of firefighters working through the night tried to prevent the blaze from spreading, block by block, as they were confronted by wind gusts of up to 50 mph. One firefighter was injured, though it’s unclear how.

Fire officials said the intensity of the fire, coupled with the high winds, made it pretty much unstoppable.

"The prospects for containment are not good,” Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen said at a news conference. “Really, Mother Nature is going to decide.”

I'm surprised that there are few posts in this thread on the SoCal fires since I know so many of our members live in or near areas potentially in the path. Understandable not to hear from those who are preparing to evacuate or worse had their homes burned. DoomsDave, do you have an idea of how many members are in the immediate areas of the fires? Videos and photos of the steep mountain terrain with the sky high flames and wind driven embers are truly frightening. Hope everyone is able to evacuate safely and hope all of our firefighters stay safe too.

Many of us now keep up with each other on Facebook.  This is no knock on PT, but since FB is people to people focused rather than topic focused, it is a bit easier for non-palm related things.

I heard on the news up here that the smoke was bad in Santa Barbara. Not surprised by the ash. When we were down in Santa Ynez the day after the Whittier Fire started (I know great time to vacation in a wildfire area), we drove to our B&B with ash falling there. Also not a great time to have tickets in Buellton for an open air theater (a little ash on us there too). No doubt you guys got smoke and ash from that fire too. Really bad for everyone's lungs. We stopped in a local CVS and picked up some of those blue face masks that you frequently see to use for the theater, only to later learn that unless it's labeled N95 or N100 it doesn't offer any protection from the very fine particles that will be in wildfires. Fortunately for us and our vacation the winds changed after the first day or two and the air cleared. I hope you guys in SB and surrounding areas are able to get a hold of the higher rated masks and people use them when they are out. Only one pair of lungs and what goes in stays in as an irritant. Good reference article for wildfires and masks: https://www.doh.wa.gov/Portals/1/Documents/Pubs/334-353.pdf

I saw that the Thomas Fire was reaching Carpenteria and hope they get it controlled before it reaches any further north. I feel for you guys.
