Fertilizing my palms

Recommended Posts

I live in SC and currently use Carl Pools fertilizer.I have bark mulch around them as well. When its time to fertilize this fall do I rake the mulch back and apply directly to the ground or do I leave a thin layer of mulch, fertilize and then cover with the remaining mulch again. Or do I just throw it on top of the mulch as this looks terrible.I don't want to burn my palms...again. Last time I raked it all back to the ground, fertilized and covered it up and still got some burning.Whats the correct way with mulch? Thanks!

If you get burning you might need to review the dosage?

Anyway, here I only use fertilizer during the growing season and do not fertilize any more after summer as the palm goes in a sort of hibernation during winter with no growth at all. Fertilizing would be could useless.

In spring and summer a just throw some hands of fertilizer on top of the mulching (gravel, coconut chips or wood chips),

kind regards
Niek

lapalmeraie is spot on. I am not familiar with Carls but you should use a good time-release palm fertilizer that has major & minor elements.

In my area we don’t fertilize palms after late July, it can cause a lot of tender growth on feather palms that can get zapped from a cold winter, trachy might be the only palm that you should fertilize in August. Also a fall fertilizer is better in mid summer one that promotes good root growth and helps keep the new leaves green like ironite mineral supplement. But trachy’s don’t need very much so go easy on it. If these are newly planted palms I would skip fertilizing anymore this year, just my two cents worth.
