Are Olives Straight Off the Tree Poisonous?

I heard that olives straight off of the tree without being processed are poisonous. Then I heard that they just taste disgusting when not cured. Which is true?

I don't know about "poisonous" but I believe unprocessed olives are pretty nasty to eat. However, as I don't like olives in any form I am hardly an expert. My native-Cali parents pondered disowning me for that sin.

The native parrots in my region of Australia love to eat olives from the un utilized urban and feral trees. They help to spread the trees everywhere. Olives would have to be close to the top of the list of problematic trees in my area. Well managed they are awesome but feral and unkempt trees need to be removed.

Not poisonous, just bitter.  They need to be processed to be palatable  (Sorry for the "bad" English.....)

Funny to process the green type you need to poison them in lye!

Solid zone 9, I can expect at least one night in the mid to low twenties every year.

Hot, dry summers. Cold, wet winters.

What actually is 'lye' ?

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!
