It has a bit of a tilt towards the fence. I do not want to re-position it. Do you think it will center itself later? (granted it survives, of course)

I used brood lamps (one per coconut) focused on the black lava sand which in turn reflects heat upwards towards the palm. I stopped using the brood lamps the first week of February.

You can see the lamps in the pictures. Yes, they are real dusty because I did not remove them.  I have about 1 to 1.5 inches of top layer of lava "sand" where the coconuts are planted.  And on the cold, wet days I used a tarp to cover each coconut from the incoming cold water so it does not seep into the roots nor the forming spear.

I must say, this past winter was very, very wet and cold.

Looks good! Will you leave them all as they grow, or move some?

You can buy single boards for that fence at Home Depot if you ever want to. They're really cheap.

I have each of  the original boards.

Coconuts are sunloving palms. I took some of the boards out in a strategic fashion. It has worked. I'll just say it's part of the "enigma code" to grow cocos nucifera successfully in 32.6+ north latitude.

They are probably a little harder there than here.  Even thought they are not truly hardy here, Lowe's and Home Depot sell them by the truckload... literally.  They do OK here, but one of those really rough freezes wipes them out.  I have found that they seem to like a relatively fast-draining, light mix with some water down at the bottom of the root zone.

That does it.  I'm going to get some rock salt next time I'm at the store and try it out.  Might try the same thing on my mangrove seedling that never puts on size.  None of the ones I have tried ever do.  Maybe it's the salt.  Not to change the subject, though.

Hello again Alex,

Btw did you lose your A. Merrilli ?

Hi Pedro. Still alive and kicking. I lost two of its siblings ( they were a triple in the pot), one during winter and the other in June. But the survivor is pushing out a new spear.

It's interesting but I do not protect my potted cocos nor merrilii through winter. For experimental purposes.

So in your experience A. Merrilli is a bit more cold sensitive? I have heard both stories:P. It is nice to see you are doing unprotected growth too, do the unprotected have heating lights?

Seems in dry California A.merrillii  are two ticks more cold sensitive than cocos and it's the other way around in Florida.

Case in point: you'll see Coconuts in California, but no merrillii.

And yes, unprotected: no supplemental heat except for the south facing wall behind them.

My 2 hyophorbe lagenicaulis are street side(facing west, house wall behind them), no direcr sunlight until 2-3pm.  No supplemental heat as well.
