Great work with those seeds! 8 days... Congrats! Medemia argun, I've thinking about it. A great palm for my dry Mediterranean climate.

Thank you.  Used a bag with a lot of bottom heat for Medemia (got 10 more in the germination station) and a Solo cup with 2 inches of medium between the seeds and the heat mat for the Neoveitchia.  The Neoveitchia are being taken care of for @palmsOrl.  He ordered them originally.

I have 2 Medemia argun in the ground outside.  Sometimes they give growers fits, but thus far haven't been too particular after they got in their planting holes.  Hoping to add these to the ground eventually.

I could handle doing that.  Those racks are now full of Ptychosperma elegans, Wodyetia bifurcata, and Delonix regia sprouts.

One of the measures of whether a palm is happy in its location is if it can grow to maturity, flower and set fruit.  The local specimens of Pseudophoenix sargentii are now confirmed to do all of the above and produce viable offspring.  This seed sprouted in a month after being "shelled" and came from a fruit in transition from green to red:

Thank you, Eckhard!  I tend to experiment with different methods to see which ones produce the quickest and most complete germination.  So far, the biggest factor seems to be bottom heat.

@waykoolplantz Beautiful palms!  If you ever get more seed I'd be interested.

@kinzyjr great thread, thanks for sharing!  I have tons of seeds in various stages of germination, often from ones collected around town as well.  Grabbed a few from my recent trip to Minneapolis as well!

My Medemia argun prep routine:

  • If the seeds still have the fruit pulp attached, soak them in water for 24 hours.  The fruit coating will absorb water and swell, making it easier to remove.20220703_MedemiaSeedWithFruit.jpg.2f80a9515dc014bdc86e7d88f28a91c8.jpg
  • Gently squeeze the fruit and attempt to cut the side opposite of the stem.  Sometimes just squeezing will be enough to crack the gingerbread-like coating.20220703_MedemiaFruitSplit.jpg.fbd5d7bbdf67c3a88a0673ff0f3ea885.jpg
  • Use pruning sheers to split the coating and pop the seed out.20220703_MedemiaFruitSplitRemoveSeed.jpg.2692ec70a408c7cba878fe915ac3655d.jpg
  • With the seed removed, you can take off the stem if it is still attached and rub off some of the papery coating.20220703_MedemiaFinished.jpg.e087d6ba39cbba3699a37858616d6cae.jpg
  • Soak for another 24 hours.
  • Heat mat + a week usually yields germination.
