Washingtonia

I was at a wedding this weekend and had to take this picture.  It's a Washingtonia robusta that appeared to have germinated, many years ago, in the crux of an olive tree.  Some roots now reach the ground providing nutrition.

Absolutely amazing! I seem to be one of the few that likes them.

You've got to respect their will to live!

My transplanted volunteer died all the way including the spear. Now, amazingly, the spear is green AGAIN! It's gonna make it :D

i have to admit that i like them, too.the main reason is this "brushed" coloration at the base of the petioles.

this ones only a few years old & already approx.12 feet tall--it won't be long till i won't be able to appreciate the the colors anymore!

Those Washies are almost like live, autonomous, cancerous tumors.

They pop up EVERYWHERE, and before you know it, they're raiding your icebox and you need to microwave 'em like the Gremlins in the movie.

I had a couple lodge in the crotch of my Tree of Lust and Desire, and I pulled them out.  More'll be back, I'm sure.

Matt,

Seems like you attend a wedding every other week these days. Are you a Justice of the Peace now? Really, how many have you been to the last 3-4 months?

I know, it's been 3 in the last few months....and we don't even know the couples.  We just crash the open bar!!!Whoooohooooooo :P  This damn wedding was on the hottest day ever, literally (Saturday) in San Diego and it was an outside reception under a tent.  Oh....man it was hot!  We felt like we were in the South!

Another example of this palms resilience.  For that reason alone, it is one of my favorites.

When Washingtonias look their best ? when they are as tall as buildings and shine against the blue skies and have Phoenix palms as companions.

Here's some here in Brisbane, Australia, at the old botanical gardens.
