Lots of ice build up on my palms in NC. This is nothing new though...I once had all the fronds straight down, vertical...they recovered just fine.  First year for my needle palm, and the cover blew off last night we'll see how that turns out :)

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

The trunks themselves are pretty well insulated with their natural fibers. It's the tender emerging growth point I'd be most concerned with. All this depending on your low temps.

Cheers, Barrie.

My larger palms have recovered nicely!!  We had 3 days below freezing with snow and ice and the temperature was 6 degrees.  I know it's early but there are absolutely no signs of damage !! These are tough palms :)

Nice! Sucked we had to get such cold Temps in an overall milder than normal winter. I hope no more single digits this winter or ever again... only 6 winters with single digits in Raleigh since 1990. I feel like this cold blast did less damage then 2014 and 2015  even though Temps got down to 9 in Raleigh. wonder why.

I don't have any photos or palms of my own yet... but all palms in my neck of the woods are fine after the blast, including sabal palmetto. I wonder how palms in Virginia are doing after subzero,  yikes!

I know of quite a few more, 4 at a house near Knightdale. 2 monsters that have been there since 07 outside a taekwondo place. 4 monsters outside the Wendell dmv that unfortunately died during 2014. 2 more outide a neighbors house, a few in Cary. then 2 in front of a pool place on capital with another 4 in front of an automotive place just next door.

Plant Delights in Raleigh sell a Sabal extremely cold hardy...

https://www.plantdelights.com/products/sabal-brazoriensis

I might get one this spring and try, but I've also seen many other sabals die in the area but I'd like a variety in my yard.

If you're looking for palms windmills, sabal minors, needle palms, and even sagos( plant in protective shade area) will all do very well here!

Yep, sagos are really super iffy here though. I have a friend who planted one two years ago. It went through last winters 15 degrees with a breeze. Haven't been by his house to see how its doing after 9 degrees, hoping for a miracle! A bakery in Raleigh near NC state had 2 sago's that I saw after 2015, 1 was dead the other somehow pushed through. Both were planted in a very sheltered spot though.  I have seen sabal die in this area, I think 2014 killed exactly half of all the sabal palmettos I knew of, the ones that survived managed to push through 2015 also. If you plant a sabal put it in a good spot. I hope to see more of them planted so the variety of palms here is not just windmills. Don't forget butias and sabals, for your list of palms that can do well, both do better than sagos. Anyways tell me about it when you plant the sabals! I'm not a palm growing expert yet so I want to start my hands off with something easy like a windmill which wouldn't require too much effort.

Here is some very cool palm streetviews that surprised me, they are from charlotte which is no different than Raleigh:

Not going to flood the thread with streetview links but these are just a taste of what I have found streetviewing for palms in the charlotte area. Wonder why Raleigh doesn't have as much as they do even though we are climatically the same, maybe because charlotte is a larger city? The last link is from a neighborhood with a ton of palms, that is just one link from the neighborhood. The first link has many other palm houses in that same general area, including a house with some very large butias. I have seen a couple young sabal brazoriensis planted around here and there  in Raleigh. I see you live in clayton, Smithfield has some massive sabal palmettos clumped together growing in front of a hotel on I-95.

That first link I thought was the best. The part that looks odd (from someone in CA) is once you pan around, all the trees are just so bare and without leaves, which for me is not tropical looking enough. I think everyone in those neighborhoods should throw a couple of palms in the grown lol

You can keep sending links if you got them, the members on here definitely don't mind looking at palms all day and night! Lol.  Wish it was a little warmer out now I'd be doing more in the yard.

I've seen those sabals in Smithfield, the hotel also has abnormally tall and skinny windmills under their entrance area as well .  So are you planning on getting some palms in the spring?  I'm slowly trying to make my yard into a mini tropical jungle over time with varieties of palms, colorful plants, and evergreens.

I found this street view from your link...

Enjoy!
