(For US residents) Visit Cuba right now?

Scheduled airline flights, lots of them, from the US to Cuba have just begun, and I suspect they'll end fairly soon, maybe sometime in February.  That suggests it's time to set up an urgent, emergency visit for educational or other approved purposes (we can't just be tourists).

Ideas?

Fla. climate center: 100-119 days>85 F
USDA 1990 hardiness zone 9B
Current USDA hardiness zone 10a
4 km inland from Indian River; 27º N (equivalent to Brisbane)

Central Orlando's urban heat island may be warmer than us

I would be very leery of traveling to Cuba as a solo American tourist. You will probably need a visa and permit from Raul's regime and my understanding is that it still is very suspicious of Americans, Obama's make-nice gestures aside, esp. if you want to visit anywhere outside Havana, i.e., palm touring. I went there in 2014 as part of a group eco tour provided by the FL Keys Tree Institute. That group obtained all necessary visas/permits that we had to have on us at all times. They arranged for all our stops and overnight stays, the Chinese bus we rode and extracting us at the end of the trip. The Cuban gov't provided a botanist, political-indoctrination guide and bus driver to make sure we got where we were going and had limited to no contact with the Cuban population outside of Havana. Our passports/papers were checked almost daily and we were watched intently. I would no more go traipsing through Cuba on my own than I would hike the hills of Iraq.

I was with Meg on that trip and loved it! Hope those who were not able to go can see the beauty of natural Cuba in the future.
