Hey all, I'll be traveling soon to California and would like to know any must see places/gardens public or private. Any recommendations along the San Francisco/LA/San Diego area?

If you have the opportunity to get down to the south bay, you might want to investigate this place,

Also in Fremont (civic center?), one of the forum members has been planting lots of palms around the lake.  I can't remember the name, but pictures have been posted here before.

Frank went to my garden on Monday evening, as it was getting dark, and took the full tour, even after darkness fell.

He took lots of pictures, including the infamous 800 Pound Gorilla, Butch, Spanky and Alfalfa, among many more.

I didn't but he certainly did.

I was the dead last stop; it was getting dark when he got here, dark when he left.

I have a $500 credit with Delta to burn up by October 2017, so need to fit a California trip sometime.  Got to be sometime other than late March thru late May (missing spring, alas).  I have a decent excuse to visit the San Diego Zoo, new home of the Center for Plant Conservation.  Would like to see California native plants and of course palms and cycads.

My last beaches-at-a-distance were Kill Devil Hills and Auckland's Piha; California ones are perhaps not mandatory but it's been a decade since I did a bus tour from San Diegos's Mission Beach to Torrey Pines.

I am not big on driving around other people's big cities (Miami is disagreeable enough) so would rather use transit or try Uber around San Diego or LA.

Fla. climate center: 100-119 days>85 F

Central Orlando's urban heat island may be warmer than us

It was indeed a great trip. We tried to get a taste of California in one week's trip so it was packed to say the least!

First we explored the San Francisco area, and Sonoma and Napa for some wine tasting.IMG_1126.thumb.JPG.28ca1831d3dac3ad9e868

Then went for a day trip to Yosemite.

Next, we did San Francisco proper: Pier 39, Ghirardelli, etc., Golden gate bridge, and parkIMG_1638.thumb.JPG.9b420645bb066bc198df4

From there we hit the Pacific Coast Highway towards Santa Monica (a brutal drive but definitely worth it!)IMG_1674.thumb.JPG.39a2db2d145e57b88f0d5IMG_1682.thumb.JPG.3ac3047fe5daf721f192f

Night fell in Santa Cruz

IMG_1733.thumb.JPG.128f22003b4d42c05d334

and we took a 'Hillavator' ride down the highway of romanzoffian, to have dinner at ShadowbrookIMG_1734.thumb.JPG.ea6bd01e9a11357cfbd24

The drive thereafter, aside from breathtaking views of the Milky Way and the rest of the universe, was one of the darkest, sleepiest, caffeine demanding I ever had.

WOW

Those Ceroxylons in your first SF picture rock the house. You're giving Pando a run for his money with your pictures.

I'm agog, fell on the floor, almost squished a cat . . .

Excellent pics Frank! Glad you enjoyed your time here. I almost offered, but I figured there are better places to see than my front yard.. :) (Proof in your pics!)

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

-George-Louis Leclerc de Buffon-

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Frank, I am sorry I missed this thread (before your trip).  I usually only read the main topic section,  I am always happy to spend some PRA with Palmtalkers.  So, people, give me an advance 'heads up' if you plan to visit the Bay Area.

Dave, the two Ceroxylons are C. quindiuense, and the third one on the right is C. vogelianum.  These are from the late Garrin Fullington, I have a seed sibling to these palms in my garden.
