Palmetum, Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Hello all,

I am new on this forum. I live in Belgium and last summer I went on holiday to Tenerife. And of course I had to visit the Palmetum.

So I wanted to share a few photo's.

I'm sorry but the pictures are not in the right order.

Wow, Welcome om Palmtalk and thank you for sharing all these photos.

I am really impressed by all the species growing there (in Spain) like Carpoxylon or other really tropical species I am used to see in Singapore or Peradeniya.

Carlo has done a great job helping to drive such a collection!!  Thanks for the update!

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

"The great workman of nature is time."   ,  "Genius is nothing but a great aptitude for patience."

-George-Louis Leclerc de Buffon-

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

The pictures are wonderful.  Last one looks a lot like Acoelorraphe wrightii, a slow grower.  Because Canary Islanders came to America in large numbers, it's good to see palms from across the Atlantic.  There ought to be Sabal minor from Texas.  I think San Antonio was once largely Canary Islands people.

The Palmetum took enormous effort and a very long time to become ready to open to the public.  I think I recall serious setbacks along the way.

Unfortunately, from Florida, it's probably cheaper to visit Queensland than the Canaries.

Fla. climate center: 100-119 days>85 F
USDA 1990 hardiness zone 9B
Current USDA hardiness zone 10a
4 km inland from Indian River; 27º N (equivalent to Brisbane)

Central Orlando's urban heat island may be warmer than us

Thank you for the pictures, what a change to the place since my last 2 visits prior to its opening and when it had no water connected, fencing etc

Carlo has done a great job, his tenacity has paid off and the gardens is his legacy.

regards

Colin
