Double Dypsis Decipiens help

Matt in OC

Recommended Posts

I posted last week about a crispy frond on the smaller of my double dypsis decepiens. It looked to me like the new spear was growing fine so I wasn't too worried.

Today I gave that new spear a gentle tug and out it popped. Same with the crispy frond. The bigger half appears fine. I think this was brought on by lack of water during our hot and dry period a few weeks ago but now I'm not sure. This guy has been growing like a champ until just recently

I doused it with a good deal of fungicide and gave the big one a good shot as well. Thoughts? Advice? Should I leave it or cut the sucker off?

Leave it, and wait, and show what happens.

I don't buy that cutting heads off. Another head is a good thing.

Since this got a bump from a few months back, the question begs to be answered.  What did you do, and how is it doing?  Hoping for some good news!

Thanks for checking as I forgot I asked for advice on it. It is doing perfectly fine as a single and has grown well through the winter. I did fungicide and H2O2 treatments on the dead sucker but it is long gone. I'm relieved the main plant is fine still!

Great.  You may have the added benefit of seeing it grow faster now as a single too.  That is assuming you want it to get bigger faster, even though some plants we enjoy more when they are small.  I have a double and a single D decipiens, with the single planted 5 years behind the double, and it has about caught up in size.  My Aloes and Encephalartos have outpaced the double Dypsis decipiens in overall size attainment since they were planted.

Well, this guy was chugging along beautifully as a single. I walked by it tonight and though the spear looked a little funny. Gave it a gentle tug and pop, son of a ****!

The only thing I can think of is it may have gotten a little water in the crown last week when I was watering in fertilizer. If that's what did it, it was damn fast. I treated it with Immunox really well and will keep doing so. Any other suggestions?
