Palm Hybrids in Germany

Jubutia

Recommended Posts

Hello,

in Germany only few species can be grown outside because very long cold an wet winters. this year we have a very ugly summer until now.... only few hot days up to 25 or 30 degresse Celsius, but a lot of rain and thunderstorms, cold nights down to 10 degrees Celsius. So hotloving palms are have no good days at the moment. Good growing outside. Trachycarpus, Chamaerops, Parajubaea and some others. I.e. Brahea and Butia a lot slower.

So I have collected some hybrids and hope they will grow better in pots or maybe planted out with winterprotection within the next years.

These are some examples. Mostly grown in greenhouse to speed up grows in the first years. Please comment when thinking its no hybrid or mystify...

Any replys welcome. Have fun.

Happy Growing

Oliver

sorry last picture was again (jxb) x Parajubaea Sunkha...

Next: 2 plants of B.parag x P. cocoides; the juvenile leaves before splitting are very small, only about 7 or 8 inches maximum. So this makes me nervous.... realy hybrids or pure B.paraguyansis?

Hello Ben,

thank you. Most are from Patric. The B. eriospatha hybrids are grown from seeds of rps. The (jxb) x Psunkha is from an German Caycads seller. Do not know exactly if from Tim Hopper Questionhybrids or from another Seller in SouthAmerica.

Nice hybrids that should be grown more often here. I think especially the JxS has great potential.
I used to have a Yatay x Jubaea as well but I planted it in Brissago last year. Yours looks somewhat more delicate / less robust than mine, have a look here: http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/41133-yatay-x-jubaea-f1/#comment-636690

Nice collection of hybrids. We do not have any experience with those hybrids here in Germany. At least as far as i know. Like with many other exotic plants to survive our winter just being frost hardy is not enough. The wet climate especcialy in February and March is a killer when day temperatures are just a bit over the freezing point but night temperatures still way below. With the constant rain in this time of the year the water is melting over the day but freezes during the nights. Thats why i dont think any Parajubaea hybrid will have a chance over here. My Parajubaeas all died and it was not because of the frost. The only hybrid i grow at the moment is Jubaea x Butia orodate F2 from seed (RPS). Maybe i should also try some of Patricks hybrids. To find another feather pam that can survive our winters without being heavily protected would be awesome.

Yes, Patric has done best hybrid palms to test in Europe. Thanks to him.

I think one of my JxS is more Syagruslike.  But the older one looks a bit more Jubaealike, didn`t make such great leaves like the younger one before splitting.

Flow, thanks for the link. I know this thread and like these Yatay x Jubaea shown there. I think mine is to young to show same compact growth. Lets see in a jew months or years :-)

Hi Oliver

I have just taken some up to date pictures of my hybrids that you also have.

The most show some damage from winter or the heavy late frost we had in the end of April.

I've never heard of the hybrid (JxB) x Parajubaea sunkha. Needless to say I'd like to get my hands on at least one of these.
