PSSC July Meeting Siegel and Portwood Gardens

Kim

Recommended Posts

July in palm gardens in California, a great way to spend the day, chatting with the palm aficionados, admiring the successes of steadfast palm growers.

First up, the garden of Gary Siegel, the grower shown here with his prize Hyophorbe verschaffeltia and 8 years of effort in the background.  More shots from the front garden follow.

A good part of the fun is seeing palm friends again; here Jason chats wth Gregg and Debby Hamann. The front garden has grown quite dense, and there are marvelous gems to appreciate if one looks closely, all enhanced by the sounds of water splashing and the welcoming atmosphere.

The rear garden was devoted to several kinds of citrus which were heavy with fruit, but palms were in the mix.  A dainty-leaved Jacaranda, amazingly still in bloom, quietly dropped luscious blossoms on the heads of those passing beneath like little blessings.  In the near distance, the mountains leapt upward.  It would be a thrill to see this view in winter after snowfall on those sharp peaks.

It was here I finally met the elusive Pando, whose face shall remain elusive... B)

Onward to the garden of Brett and Sheryl Portwood, a clear standout in the neighborhood, as is typical of palm fanatics.

Looks like some of these palms have been here for more than a short while...

A well-grown fat and happy Dypsis decaryi and a fabulous Roystonea, my guess is regia?

Someone undoubtedly knows the true identity of this very beefy and well-armed fan palm? I forgot to ask, too busy socializing...

As BS Man and Tracey looked on, Josh-O threatened a D. prestoniana impostor or possible hybrid with his quick and agile martial arts moves.  The palm remained mute in spite of this menacing display, and we never did learn why it was a little on the skinny side.

This garden was ideal for small group chats with ladies in hats.

The palms planted around the waterfall/spa were so lush and gorgeous, I just had to post a bunch of photos.  There were plenty of palm peepers in attendance, as you can see, and there was a Ficus dammaropsis that sneaked into the photos, along with an Achmea blanchetiana, Plumeria, and a few exotic cycads.

Every great palm garden tries a Chambeyronia macrocarpa for that stunning emergent red leaf.

The palapa served well for the potluck buffet.  I can personally attest to DoomsDave's culinary skill with a stew. All the grub was good!

Is this a Thunbergia? A Beaumontia grandiflora?  Inquiring minds want to know.  Syagrus botryophora methinks, and a very fine one at that.

If you have photos, you are welcome to add them here.  Cheers!
