Tracy 4,582 Report post Posted July 8, 2016 I'll throw my hat in the ring.... mine doesn't draw the attention yet, as it is in the backyard of a 2 story house with plenty of other palms obscuring the view to the back. I think the first photo was 1 or 2 years after planting my Bizzie in Carlsbad, and the photo was June 2009. Wall in back is about 5'10" high. The second photo was the same Bizzie taken in early June, and I'll be modest in my height estimate, it's something over 6' tall now, but how much over is up to your perspective.

Tracy 4,582 Report post Posted July 8, 2016 Just now, Josh-O said: is it growing in clay???? Yes, but I learned to amend the soil before planting. I lost Kentia's, and D decaryi which I planted shortly after moving in to that house in 1996 to root rot. Fortunately that lot is on a slope, so I put in terraces which help provide drainage. It is predominantly a red clay soil, with layers of a grey colored clay that look like you could dig out and use for ceramic bowls. Your Carlsbad house has a lot more rock than mine. Amazing, as my Carlsbad house is roughly in the middle between you and where I am in Leucadia with the sandy soil, and all three are very different soils within less than 6 miles as the crow flies. I have one that I planted in clay, just over 5 years ago from a 15 gallon (2' tall) that was languishing in the shade at the nursery. It got a very slight amending when I planted it. It's level with the crown of an old garage roof. About 12' tall today. It's never got full sun, consistent watering, or great drainage, so they're definitely adaptable to different conditions. Sorry, no pictures.

Very nice and definitely one of the largest posted in this string! The only hesitation is that the photo of the ones in Balboa Park wasn't a current photo as I recall. Any idea which Encephalartos species the big green one adjacent to it is? I'm guessing I should recognize the garden, but I don't.

I don't know what cycad that is, but it's probably not there any longer.

I'm trying to recall what year that was planted. CVD aka Elm or now Carlsbad Village Drive, is on the main street going through old Carlsbad, CA, in a public planting. At the time, it was a very unusual public planting here in Southern California. I was actually surprised and impressed when it went in. If I'm not mistaken that is city property, as it is on the corner where the free downtown parking is located. Good coup getting that one installed! I guess there is a certain liability factor to any of the large palms when they get big and fronds drop. Perhaps you were referring to the aesthetic value of having it lower and more at a scale that is easily viewed though?

Good coup getting that one installed! Tracy, I planted it about 10 years ago because I DO work for the city. They kinda gave me carte blanche to play with the Downtown area and the Bismarkia has generated the most positive responses. Enough of these city landscapes that are straight outta Martha Stewart's plant palette! City scapes need more soul.
