So our first batch did really well. I want to hear from the palm community what they think of this tree. It has been around awhile in Cali and a few other places and we are going to do this hybrid full time now.

I have around 10 of them.  SOOOO tropical looking and do well in the Bay Area, laughing at our heat and cold.  I can't wait to order some from you!

They tend to be referred to as Coco Queens out here, BTW.  Even if the name is stupid.

Coconut Queens are great palms. Good you are doing this cross now because Jungle Jack's isn't any longer.

Got some seeds from rps some time ago and had difficulty germinating them. Just one seed germinated but I got 2 seedlings out of that seed. I hope they grow into good container plants for me as I am restricted to that in my climate.20160626_155649.thumb.jpg.8a90184fe96eb0

What is a germination worth without labels? B)

PS: It is the same germination type as date palms. The seed petiole is also the cotyledonary sheath.

Thank you Pal for naming the palms private parts. As you might have guessed allready, the picture is the result of a repotting event I started since receiving a bag of grabdecor and rushing to the store for a new bag of seramis.

The two S. schizo x romans are now individually potted up.

We only got about 30% germination. Which is not great. So we need to work on that aspect. I wonder why Jungle Jacks stopped doing the cross. I do believe on the East coast they are calling it the Super parrot at some nurseries and on the west coast it was called the Coconut Queen.

Good to see you & Mark hybridizing these.  They are called  Syagrus × montgomeryana.  I have a large one in the garden that exhibits the hybrid vigor.  BTW, even F2 are good sellers.  Here is a good article from PALMS.

Here is a pic of the one in the garden after my neighbors 80' Australian Pine fell on one side of it last month.  AAAAAHHHHHH!

Erik, now that you have started full time production, any guess on when you may have seeds/plants available for purchase?  These seem really hard to find.

Will not start pollinating again in December. I will see if the guy I sold the last batch to is willing to let some go. They are redily available in California.

Not to sure on the seeds Ben. We will set aside some seedlings for palmtalk members. We all ready have a couple growers that want all that we can produce.

Cool...well, consider me on your unofficial waiting list!  I already have 10 or 12 of these, but I just love them for colder climates.

It is good to know they handle the colder climates. Did not think they could handle just a few clicks past the regular queen.

Well, it's all relative I guess.  I'm growing a lot more marginal things than these, but they certainly don't flinch at the 30 degrees that generally represents our yearly low.

What is the lowest temps yours have seen Ben? I'm wondering if they would take my low temps.

Not been below 30 since I put my weather station in a few years back - that's generally about where we bottom out.  Right on the border of 9b/10a, just barely getting a freeze.  But - these guys can take a LOT lower!

Schizophylla, the less hardy of the cross, should be able to survive mid to low 20s so I wouldn't worry about this hybrid until your looking at numbers below say 24f.

I'm looking into a weather station. What do you have? I see the Accutite ones on Amazon for a little over $100. Just not sure what the quality is

I expect not very good - you want something with a proper radiation shield.  I have an Ambient Weather WS-2080, with upgraded radiation shield, and wireless integration for WUnderground.  Fan aspiration is a plus for increased accuracy as well.

I also have an Ambient (Ambient Weather WS-1400-IP Wireless). It seems to be very accurate as well. I think I paid about $150.00.

I wonder what the "coco" queen; super parrot; montgomeryana would have done this weekend in my yard.... low of 25-27 F? If could survive, would like to have a few.
